🚨 DEAR CHURCH: WATCH YOUR STEP 🚨
It always starts small.
You laugh at an off-limits joke to fit in at work. You skip church for brunch with new friends. None of it feels like a major sacrifice.
But slowly, the faith that once guided you begins to dim. The world starts shaping you, instead of you shaping the world.
That exact tension is what Jesus addresses in His letter to Pergamum (Revelation 2:12-17).
This Sunday, join our sermon series Dear Church as we hear a loving Shepherd speak honestly to His sheep about compromise, culture, and calling. Are you holding fast to the truth, or quietly blending in?

Stepping Down from the Throne

“There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?” — James 4:12

It’s very common for us to unintentionally assume the role of a “volunteer judge” during our everyday interactions. When we find ourselves criticizing a friend’s decisions or gossiping about a neighbor’s shortcomings, we're not just sharing our opinions; we're quietly stepping into a position of authority that isn't ours to take. James gently reminds us that judging others is akin to judging the Law itself—the fundamental law of love that we're called to follow and uphold.

The role of the Sovereign of the universe is fundamentally about the power to “save” and “destroy.” Since none of us has the wisdom to truly understand another's heart or the power to decide the fate of an eternal soul, we are simply not equipped to sit on the judge’s bench. When we choose to judge others, it can be seen as a form of “presumptive rebellion,” because it attempts to take on God’s unique role as the only Lawgiver.

Instead of judging our neighbors, James is inviting us to walk with gentle humility. This doesn’t mean we ignore sin, but it encourages us to shift from condemning others to seeking restoration. When we recognize how much grace we need from the Judge, it’s much easier to extend grace rather than wield a gavel over others.

Have you recently found yourself judging someone in your thoughts? If that's the case, try shifting your focus. Instead of criticism, consider sending prayers for that person’s well-being and spiritual growth. It can be a gentle way to foster kindness and understanding.

Today, embrace your role as a doer of the true law by living out love and mercy, rather than just judging it.

Heavenly Father, forgive me for when I have taken on the role of judge. Remind me that only You are the Lawgiver. Guide me to relinquish the throne of self-righteousness and instead show Your mercy to those around me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Seeking to Step Down from the Bench,

Gene

Celebrating the Ultimate Investment this Mother’s Day

"We were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children..." — 1 Thessalonians 2:7

Mothers understand better than anyone what it means to pour your life into another person. This Sunday, we want to honor the women who have loved, prayed, and sacrificed for us.

But we’re also asking a big question: What are you investing your life in?

Come celebrate Mother’s Day with us and be inspired by the incredible story of William Borden—a man who gave everything for a mission bigger than himself.

Bring the whole family!

You Are Richer Than You Look đź’Ž

Does it ever feel like you’re doing everything right, but still falling behind?

In the first century, Christians in Smyrna lived in a thriving, wealthy city. However, their refusal to conform led to losing everything.

They were shut out. They were squeezed. They were broke.

From the outside, they looked like a failure.

But Jesus looked at them and said three words that changed everything:

(But you are rich.)

If you're feeling life's "crush'—whether from financial pressure, social isolation, or maintaining faith in a misunderstood world—this message is for you.

Jesus isn't giving a "look on the bright side" speech. He’s sharing the testimony of One who was dead and is now alive—a wealth the world can't touch or the bank hold.

Join us this Sunday as we dive into Revelation 2 and discover why the church that seemed to be losing was actually the one wearing the crown.

"If you are not praying, then you are quietly confident that time, money, and talent are all you need in life. You'll always be a little too busy, a little too tired. But if... you realize you can't do life on your own, then no matter how busy, no matter how tired you are, you will find the time to pray." ~Paul Miller

Do you remember when your faith felt fresh? 🌿

Do you remember when worship wasn’t a routine and prayer wasn't a chore?

Many of us know what it’s like for that initial "fire" to quietly go out. We have the habits, the seats, and the history—but something vital is missing.

This Sunday at Calvary, we’re looking at a tender, direct letter from Jesus to a church just like ours. In Revelation 2, He calls His people back to their "first love." Whether you’ve felt isolated lately or you’re just going through the motions, this message is for you.

It’s time to come back to the start.

We’ll save a seat for you!
