Wilson Memorial Chapel

Wilson Memorial Chapel The Wilson Memorial Chapel, at Ocean Point in East Boothbay, holds services during July and August on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. The stone chapel was built in 1917.

Religious services were held in Ocean Point as early as 1899, first in homes and then in the Casino. Worship was led by ministers summering in the area, and among them was the Rev. Lewis G. Wilson, a Unitarian minister. On August 4, 1917, the Janet M. Wilson Memorial Chapel was dedicated in memory of Lewis Wilson’s devoted wife who had died two years earlier. Mr. Wilson raised the money for the Ch

apel almost single-handedly from Ocean Pointers and friends. Among the contributions was a generous donation from the American Unitarian Association. The architect for the Chapel was Edwin J. Lewis, Jr. Wilson and other Ocean Pointers joined the hired builders in the toil of selecting the stones and erecting the structure. The Chapel was owned for many years by the Unitarian association. In 1985, it was purchased by a committed group of Ocean Pointers, who established a charitable corporation to hold ownership of the building, and then raised the funds to buy the Chapel from the Unitarian association. Since its original dedication, the Chapel has been dear to the hearts of the people who summer at Ocean Point and in the region. Children are christened here; couples of all ages are married in the Chapel; and memorial services are occasionally held. The Chapel is maintained entirely through the work and monetary generosity of Ocean Pointers, friends and worshippers. The Chapel, in turn, supports missions and non-profits in the Boothbay and greater Maine area. Sunday services in July and August at 9:30 a.m.
