The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Israel has formally become Ocala Woman of Valor. We will be meeting at the Church of the Holy Faith in Dunnellon on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
Our mission remains to join together with other like minded women of all persuasions to for comradeship, education, and most important, to serve the community.

I will be opening a Facebook site for this group and discontinuing this page within the next month.

We are most grateful to Father Paul Hamilton of this liberal Episcopal church for providing us with a home and for reaching out in friendship to us. We hope that our partnership will continue to grow and be an asset to our community.

Between the sweet foods, the blast of the shofar, and of course a bunch of great books, Rosh Hashanah is a pretty perfect family holiday. This roundup of activities includes a few extra things to enhance your celebration of the Jewish new year, which starts tomorrow night.

Discussion Cards
These print-at-home flashcards are a great way to spark discussions about big High Holiday themes with the tweens, teens, and adults in your house. There are 40 cards in all, and they're available in English, Hebrew, Russian, or Spanish.

Tashlich Map
Tashlich ("casting off" sins on Rosh Hashanah) is traditionally done in a body of water, and two artists from and created what they call Tashlikh Atlas (same ritual, different English spelling). This resource will pull a list of all the bodies of water near you, so you can go do Tashlich together as a family.

Because of the surge of covid19, we are not planning on holding any services this year. We recommend streaming by Central Synagogue in NYC; they do lovely services.

As soon as it seems prudent, our Sisterhood presidents will call for meetings again.

Until then have a Happy and Healthy Rosh Hashanah! L'Shana Tovah!

The Karnofsky Jewish family, who immigrated to the United States from Lithuania, employed a 7-year-old boy and adopted (so to speak) him into their home. He was originally given homework to get food because he was a starving kid. He remained under the Jewish families employ, until he was 12

Karnofsky gave him money to buy his first instrument, which was a common instrument in Jewish families. They really admired his musical talent.

Later, when he became a professional musician and composer, he used these Jewish melodies when composing!

This little black boy grew up and wrote a book about this Jewish family who adopted him in 1907. And he spoke proudly to Yiddish.

In memory of this family and for the rest of his life, he carried the Star of David and said that in this family he had learned to ′ ′ live real life and determination ”.

This little boy was called Louis Armstrong

A reminder of the war on the homefront. This battle required a completely different, yet every bit as real courage. So many of the brave men of D-Day had more than one heart with them on the beaches.
