Some relationships are built on mutual destruction rather than genuine love.

But the opposite is also true. There are friendships forged through suffering, healing, truth, and grace that become sacred. They endure. They hold us together through the vicissitudes and trials of life. Friendship, brotherhood, sisterhood, covenant community, these are among the most beautiful gifts God gives human beings.

This is where I think Fresh Expressions become so important. One of the quiet crises of modern church life is that many congregations have become primarily event-based performances rather than relational ecosystems. We gather for an hour, sit beside people we barely know, and then disappear back into isolated lives. But friendship, the kind capable of sustaining transformation, requires shared presence over time. It requires embodied life together in real places, doing real things, through ordinary rhythms of the week.

Around burrito tables, recovery circles, dog parks, tattoo parlors, dinner tables, walking trails, and neighborhood gatherings, people begin building the kinds of relationships that can actually hold human beings together through suffering and healing. Not frenemies organized around consumption or convenience, but covenant friendships rooted in grace, truth, vulnerability, and mutual care. In a fragmented and lonely world, these small communities become resistance movements of love. And this is the unique gift the church has to offer in an age where idolatry has been normalized. -Michael Beck
