✝️ 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗖 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗢𝗡?

The Apostolic Pardon is a special blessing of the Catholic Church, normally given by a priest to a Catholic who is in danger of death.

It is connected with a plenary indulgence at the hour of death, provided the required conditions are fulfilled.

It is not a separate sacrament and it does not replace Confession, Anointing of the Sick, or Viaticum. Rather, it is an additional spiritual grace offered by the Church to the dying faithful.

✝️ 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗜𝗧 𝗗𝗢?

The Apostolic Pardon remits the temporal punishment due to sins under the conditions established by the Church.

In simple terms:

Confession forgives the guilt of sin.

The Apostolic Pardon, when properly received with the required dispositions, grants the Church's indulgence for the temporal consequences of sins.

This is why it is particularly precious at the hour of death.

✝️ 𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗜𝗧?

A priest can impart the Apostolic Pardon to a Catholic who is properly disposed and in danger of death.

It is commonly given together with the Church's pastoral care of the dying, which may include:

Confession

Anointing of the Sick

Viaticum, the Eucharist given to the dying

Prayers for the dying

The Apostolic Pardon

If a priest cannot be obtained, the Church also provides a way for a dying person who is properly disposed to gain the plenary indulgence at the point of death, under the conditions specified by the Church.

✝️ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛

Imagine a Catholic lying seriously ill, knowing that death may be near.

The priest comes.

He hears the person's confession, gives the Anointing of the Sick, offers Holy Communion as Viaticum, prays with the person, and imparts the Apostolic Pardon.

What a beautiful expression of the Church's care.

The Church does not abandon her children at the hour of death.

She accompanies them with prayer, the sacraments, and the mercy of Christ.

For this reason, Catholics should not wait until the last moments before calling a priest when a loved one is seriously ill.

Call the priest early.

There may still be time for Confession, Anointing, Viaticum, prayers, and the Apostolic Pardon.

The Church wants us to meet death prepared, reconciled, and united with Christ
