GROWING STRONGER🌱

A public school in Bataan used its own garden to help every undernourished pupil gain weight.

At Cabog-Cabog Integrated School in Balanga City, the garden supports more than school activities. It provides vegetables for a feeding program while giving pupils hands-on lessons in agriculture, science, and sustainability.

Through its TATAK KOMUNIDAD initiative, the school introduced hydroponics, robotics, rainwater harvesting, and organic fertilizer production. Parents, alumni, local offices, and community partners also helped keep the project running.

The vegetables are sold through a School-to-Table partnership, and the proceeds help fund the school’s daily feeding program.

The result was clear. All 44 elementary pupils previously classified as wasted or severely wasted gained significant weight. The school also observed better attendance and academic performance among the learners.

The project later earned Cabog-Cabog Integrated School a spot among the Top 10 shortlisted schools in the Environmental Action category of the 2026 World’s Best School Prizes. It is the only Philippine school included in the global shortlist.

The recognition is significant, but the school’s greatest achievement can already be seen in the children who are now healthier, stronger, and doing better in class.

Elephants may not think humans are ā€œcute,ā€ but they are intelligent enough to remember exactly how we treat them.

Research shows elephants can recognize individual human voices, recall past encounters, and distinguish between people who may pose d@nger and those who behave calmly and peacefully. These abilities allow them to build trust with familiar humans over time.

Supporters of elephant research say their advanced social intelligence helps explain why they may approach trusted people, seek gentle contact, or display relaxed and friendly behavior around them.

There is no scientific evidence that elephants view humans the way humans view puppies. However, their remarkable memory and emotional awareness suggest that kindness can leave a lasting impression on one of the world’s most intelligent animals.

Neapolitan ice cream originally looked very different from the chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry combination most people know today.

Its earliest versions were inspired by the colors of the Italian flag.

The three flavors were commonly pistachio, vanilla, and cherry, creating green, white, and red layers meant to reflect Italy's national colors.

The dessert became associated with Naples, whose ice cream makers were famous for creating elaborate frozen desserts using multiple flavors arranged side by side.

As Neapolitan-style ice cream became popular in the United States, the flavors gradually changed.

Chocolate and strawberry were more familiar to American consumers, easier to produce on a large scale, and more widely available than pistachio and cherry. Over time, the modern combination of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry became the standard.

The name stayed the same, even though the flavors changed.

So the original Neapolitan ice cream wasn't just a mix of three random flavors.

It was an edible tribute to Italy.

Desert restoration's hitting a new scale with solar robots doing the heavy lifting. China's deployed these machines across northern deserts to plant trees where human crews alone couldn't keep pace. Equipped with AI, GPS, and sensors, they analyze terrain, drill holes, place saplings, water them, and move on—all powered by the sun.

The work supports China's Great Green Wall project, started in 1979 to fight desertification. Late in 2024, they finished a 3,046-kilometer green belt surrounding the Taklimakan Desert. That's real progress against sand creep and the sandstorms that wreck nearby farms.

It's worth noting: large-scale ecological restoration usually requires human hands and knowledge. Robots handle the repetitive, physical work efficiently. But understanding soil, selecting native species for the region, and long-term ecosystem health still need human judgment. Technology's a tool here, not a replacement.

As these designs improve, fleets could help restore degraded land in other parts of the world. The combination of clean energy, automation, and restoration work points toward something worth watching.

Imagine an alien astronomer, 2,000 light years away, pointing a powerful telescope at Earth tonight. They would not see you, your city, or the modern world. They would see the Roman Empire at its height, still standing, still ruling.

The reason is one of the most mind bending truths in astronomy. Light takes time to travel. It is fast, about 300,000 kilometers every second, but the universe is so vast that even light crawls across it. When light leaves Earth, it journeys outward forever, carrying an image of our planet frozen at that exact moment. If a civilization sits 2,000 light years away, the light reaching them right now left Earth 2,000 years ago. They are not seeing the present. They are watching our ancient past unfold live.

At that distance, they would witness a world of togas and marble columns, gladiators in the Colosseum, chariots on stone roads, and legions marching across Europe. To them, that would not be history. It would be the news of the day.

This works in every direction, which is the truly beautiful part. Every star you see in the night sky is a glimpse into the past. Some of that starlight is thousands, even millions of years old. A few of those stars may have already died, yet we still see them shining, because their final light is still on its way to us. When you look up, you are never seeing the universe as it is now. You are seeing a patchwork of many different moments in cosmic history, all arriving at once.

Push the idea further and it gets stranger still. A civilization 65 million light years away, with an impossibly powerful telescope, could look at Earth and watch dinosaurs roaming the land. The deeper into space you look, the further back in time you see.

So in a very real sense, the sky is a time machine. Distance is memory. The farther away something is, the older the story its light tells.
