We don't accept that we are a "nuisance", unless you accept that the people of Oakland and the ordinary things that they do (baby showers, weddings, re-passes, quinceaneras, etc) are a nuisance.
So we wrote this letter to Greg Minor defending us and our operation, which we are very proud of.

Dear Mr. Minor,
We do not understand why this Shelter in Place Order drags on-and-on until we are completely destroyed and many other event workers and businesses are destroyed as well. Is it the place of government to destroy its citizens and to get citizens to destroy each other? If you order us to physically attack our neighbor, then are we obligated to attack them or is it better to disobey the order? And where does the State of California or the County of Alameda or the City of Oakland get the right to issue such grotesque orders? Aren’t you supposed to serve us citizens or are we all slaves now and must follow whatever orders you give us, no matter how self-destructive? Is there a place in the Bill of Rights of the US Constitution which says that, yes, we have the right to assemble and to practice our religions, but not if some government agency says that we can’t? What is the point of having the Constitution at all? Who does it protect?
As for the so-called pandemic that we are all supposed to be terrified of, we don’t see much evidence that it exists as any more than a bad flu. Yes, many are wearing masks but that seems because they have been bullied and brainwashed into doing that. Few if any have made a logical and medically-sound decision to use a mask to protect their health or the health of anyone else.
And are the baby showers, wakes, and kid parties that we host here really such a threat to public health? And what about the depression, su***de, and economic damages that the lockdown is creating? Where is the balance in the decision making?
What we see rather than a pandemic is a global economic collapse, much like the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Humanist Hall was started in 1936 to bring the local community together and try to address the problems of that collapse. Fast forward 80 years and we are no longer permitted to try to support our community?
Sincerely,
David Oertel
President of Humanist Hall
