St. George Serbian Orthodox Church - Oakland, CA

This is the page for the former St. George Serbian Orthodox Church of Oakland. As of November 2023, we are no longer holding any services. The St.

George Serbian Orthodox Church is located at the south end of Downtown Oakland. The church is a part of the Western American Dioceses (westsrbdio.org). Currently, the church is closed for regular Sunday services unless otherwise noted. Please check the page periodically as we will be updating you on any and all events. The church has facilities available to accommodate any type of celebration or s

acrament. Our facility is capable of hosting sacraments and ceremonies such as weddings, baptisms/christenings, funerals, wakes, memorials, etc. Please contact the church for information regarding these services. Apart from our church which seats nearly 100 people comfortably, we also have a small hall downstairs which can hold 50 people, and a larger banquet hall upstairs which can hold 100 people. These facilities are available for rent, for more information and availability please contact us.

We are pleased to share another exciting milestone in the construction of our new chapel. Interior painting has been completed, the flooring has been installed, and the electrical fixtures and mini-split HVAC units are now in place. Perhaps most exciting of all, the crosses have now been mounted on the roof; a beautiful and meaningful sign of the progress being made. Once camp is complete for the season, more work will begin on the exterior, including more finishes and concrete pathway work.

Our next phase will also focus on the interior finishes, including the installation of the iconography and other liturgical furnishings that will truly transform the chapel into a sacred place of worship. We are especially grateful to His Grace Bishop Maxim, whose vision and guidance have been integral to bringing this project forward.

The Board would also like to extend its sincere thanks to Fr. Marko Bojovic for his tireless efforts throughout this project. His dedication and countless hours of work have been instrumental in making this vision a reality.

Hello everyone! We are excited to share another update on the Chapel project.

The exterior brick and mortar work has now been completed, giving the chapel a much more finished appearance. Inside, the primer coat is complete, and painting is scheduled to begin next week. Concrete work for the exterior walkways will also get underway in the coming days.

To help ensure everyone's safety, a chain-link fence with a privacy screen has been installed around the construction site. With the 4th of July Festivities this weekend and Summer Camp beginning next Monday, this added barrier will help provide a safe environment for our campers, staff, and the construction crews who are working diligently to complete the project as quickly as possible.

We would like to share another weekly update on the progress of our Chapel at St. Sava Camp in Jackson.

The interior has now been fully sheetrocked and taped, with the next phase consisting of texturing and painting the walls. On the exterior, brickwork has begun, helping tie the Chapel into the architectural style of the surrounding camp buildings.

This week, we also took delivery of the beautiful crosses that will be installed atop the Chapel. These were generously donated by Master Craftsman Srdjan Milivojević of Žiča Monastery in Serbia, and we are incredibly grateful for his craftsmanship and generosity. We would also like thank His Grace Bishop Maxim for arranging the delivery of the crosses.

Hello everyone,

We are glad to share another update on the construction of the chapel at the St. Sava Camp in Jackson.

We are happy to report that all rough inspections have passed, and work has now moved into the next phase with insulation and sheetrock installation underway inside the chapel.

On the exterior, the sheathing and weatherproofing have also passed inspection, and the first layer of plaster has been applied.

Thank you all for your continued prayers, support, and encouragement as we watch this beautiful project continue to take shape.

To our supporters and friends of our Chapel Project:

We are pleased to share another construction update. The cupola roof and windows are now complete, and weatherproofing of the exterior walls and roof is underway. Inside, the altar area has begun to take shape with the installation of the raised platform and framing for the iconostasis.
With each milestone, we move one step closer to completing our chapel. Thank you for your continued support, prayers, and encouragement throughout this journey. We look forward to sharing more progress with you in the weeks ahead.

Another weekly update on the progress of our chapel!

This week, the area above the narthex was framed to accommodate an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV). In addition, electrical and HVAC work continues to move forward, and the roof of the cupola is now being framed.

As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support throughout this chapel project. We are grateful for your encouragement as we work toward bringing this vision to completion.

Glory to God for all things.

We are delighted to share that significant progress continues to be made on our new sanctuary. Despite the inclement weather last week, the roof sheathing has been completed, the cupola has been framed out, and all windows are now in place.

The next phase of construction will focus on exterior weatherproofing and the installation of essential building systems and infrastructure, bringing us another step closer to completing this beautiful house of worship.

We are deeply grateful for the many kind words, prayers, and support we have received throughout this project. Your encouragement continues to sustain us as we move forward toward the day when this sanctuary will be dedicated to the glory of God.

We would like to take this opportunity to provide an update to our faithful supporters. The roof trusses have now been successfully installed, marking another important milestone in the construction of our beautiful chapel.

The project will now move into the dry-in phase, during which exterior work—including roofing, sheathing, and related structural elements—will be completed before transitioning into interior construction.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s continued support and encouragement throughout this process. Your generosity and prayers mean a great deal to us as we continue making progress on this exciting project. We look forward to sharing additional updates as we reach future milestones.

We are pleased to share the latest progress on the new Chapel. The concrete slab has officially been poured, and framing is now underway—an exciting milestone in bringing this project to life.

It is especially meaningful to share this update as we approach Djurdjevdan. Sretna Slava to all who are celebrating!

On February 3, 2026, the Feast Day of the Venerable Maximus the Confessor, His Grace Bishop Maxim, together with Father Marko and Deacon Dragan, were joined by members of the SOCCEAA, the St. Sava Mission Corporation, the Joint Property Management Committee, and local St. Sava parishioners for the blessing and groundbreaking ceremony at the future site of the St. George Chapel on the St. Sava Camp grounds. This meaningful occasion coincided with His Grace Bishop Maxim’s name day (Imendan), as well as the iconography classes being held at the camp throughout the week. We were blessed with beautiful winter weather for the celebration, which concluded with a fellowship luncheon held in honor of the Venerable Maximus.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony of the new chapel marks a historic and deeply meaningful moment, signifying the first chapter in a generous and enduring gift from the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church of Oakland to the St. Sava Campers. This sacred beginning reflects a shared commitment to faith, heritage, and the spiritual formation of future generations. As the first stone is set, it symbolizes not only the construction of a physical sanctuary, but also the strengthening of a spiritual home where prayer, community, and Orthodox Christian values will continue to flourish. This gift stands as a testament to unity, love, and the Church’s unwavering dedication to nurturing the hearts and souls of the St. Sava Camp community for years to come.
