We would like to take this opportunity to provide an update to our faithful supporters. The roof trusses have now been successfully installed, marking another important milestone in the construction of our beautiful chapel.

The project will now move into the dry-in phase, during which exterior work—including roofing, sheathing, and related structural elements—will be completed before transitioning into interior construction.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s continued support and encouragement throughout this process. Your generosity and prayers mean a great deal to us as we continue making progress on this exciting project. We look forward to sharing additional updates as we reach future milestones.

We are pleased to share the latest progress on the new Chapel. The concrete slab has officially been poured, and framing is now underway—an exciting milestone in bringing this project to life.

It is especially meaningful to share this update as we approach Djurdjevdan. Sretna Slava to all who are celebrating!

We also extend our sincere thanks to Lana Vukovich for capturing these photos and helping us document this important moment. We will post more updates as we hit more milestones on this project.

On February 3, 2026, the Feast Day of the Venerable Maximus the Confessor, His Grace Bishop Maxim, together with Father Marko and Deacon Dragan, were joined by members of the SOCCEAA, the St. Sava Mission Corporation, the Joint Property Management Committee, and local St. Sava parishioners for the blessing and groundbreaking ceremony at the future site of the St. George Chapel on the St. Sava Camp grounds. This meaningful occasion coincided with His Grace Bishop Maxim’s name day (Imendan), as well as the iconography classes being held at the camp throughout the week. We were blessed with beautiful winter weather for the celebration, which concluded with a fellowship luncheon held in honor of the Venerable Maximus.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony of the new chapel marks a historic and deeply meaningful moment, signifying the first chapter in a generous and enduring gift from the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church of Oakland to the St. Sava Campers. This sacred beginning reflects a shared commitment to faith, heritage, and the spiritual formation of future generations. As the first stone is set, it symbolizes not only the construction of a physical sanctuary, but also the strengthening of a spiritual home where prayer, community, and Orthodox Christian values will continue to flourish. This gift stands as a testament to unity, love, and the Church’s unwavering dedication to nurturing the hearts and souls of the St. Sava Camp community for years to come.

Additional photos and updates will be shared as construction progresses.

CHAPEL UPDATE - JAN 9, 2026

Dear St George of Oakland Parishioners and Supporters:

Christ is Born! It has been almost one year since we were able to close on the sale of our property at 9th and Oak in Oakland. Over the past year, our Board has been working with His Grace Bishop Maxim and members of the St Sava Mission Corporation to build the St George Chapel on the camp property in Jackson, CA. Over this period, we engaged with a local architect who created several drawings for Bishop Maxim’s and our approval.

Our goal is to build a modest Chapel for the primary purpose of providing a place for church services for the Summer Campers at the camp. In May of 2025, we chose the building plan that meets this need, and approved the current design which is approximately 2000 sq ft and blends in with existing camp buildings.

The next phase of the project was to have mechanical engineering, structural, HVAC and other design drawings made so that we could go out for bid. This process took several months to complete. With drawings in hand, we sent bid packages to four different General Contractors for proposal. Two of these contractors were local to Jackson, and the other two were from the Stockton/Lodi area. All four contractors had submitted proposals by the end of October.

During this process, we also accepted a proposal from Milan Ninkovic to act as the Construction Project Manager. As some of you know, Milan and his family were members of our Oakland Church for many years.

This past December, we selected a local contractor for the construction of the Chapel. Based on the contractor’s plan, we have a good chance to complete the Chapel by the end of 2026. This would coincide with the 100th Anniversary of St. George in Oakland.

With the blessings of His Grace Bishop Maxim we plan to have an informal ceremonial groundbreaking sometime during the first week of February. We will update all of you on the construction progress as we move along with the process. Please continue to check this page for updates.

If you have questions or comments, please reach out via direct message.

Thank you,
SOCCEAA Boardw

To the Parishioners and Friends of St. George,

On Saturday, December 14 at 12:30pm, Fr. Djurica Gordic will be at St. George Church in Oakland to perform a Parastos for all the past members of our Opstina/Church.

An update for those on inquiring on our current situation concerning the church property in Oakland: Back in October, we received a preliminary offer for the property. While we are currently in escrow there is still a long way to go specifically meeting sale requirements by the City of Oakland and other entities.

If you can attend the Parastos, please note that many of the keepsakes and religious items have been removed from the Church and placed in storage. There will be light refreshments after the Parastos, but since many of the items from the kitchen have been moved to the St. Sava Camp in Jackson, we will not be providing a luncheon.

Regards,

St. George Board of Directors

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of one of our long time members of the St. George SOC in Oakland. On Sunday, November 5th, 2023, we held our final Divine Liturgy Service at the Saint George Serbian Orthodox Church in Oakland. His Grace Bishop Maxim led the service joined by the Very Reverend Sava Bosanac (Former Priest of St. George SOC in Oakland), the Very Reverend Djurica Gordic (St. John the Baptist SOC in San Francisco), and Deacon Dragan Stojanovich (St. Sava SOC in Jackson).

We would like to thank all of those who attended the service at our Church on 9th & Oak. While it was a somber occasion, His Grace Bishop Maxim reminded us in his sermon that We Are United in the Eucharist. We were joined by former parishioners, parishioners from neighboring churches, as well as many friends and family members. Many of our parishioners came together to organize and put on a celebration that was well received by many, and we truly were united in our celebration.

After the Divine Liturgy, a luncheon was held in the upstairs hall. During our luncheon, many were recognized for their hard work and efforts throughout the years. Many members, past and present, had an integral part in the operation of this historic church. There were also a couple of standing ovations for those who worked tirelessly to keep the church going. Even though our parish on 9th & Oak will be closing, the legacy will live on, and there will be a future for the St. George Church.

Back in August, the church board and its members voted unanimously to liquidate the property in Oakland and build a Chapel on the St. Sava Mission in Jackson. The intention of the Chapel is to give the faithful a place to worship at the Mission. More information about the building of this chapel will be determined at a later date, and we are looking forward to sharing this information with you as the project develops.

In addition to the Chapel, we intend to set up a foundation to help benefit the Serbian Religion, Heritage, and Culture. More information will be coming in regards to this foundation, who it will support, and how people can donate. Thank you all for your support, prayers, and kind words. We look forward to sharing our future journey with all of you!
