One-Day Pilgrimage on the Jubilee Year of Saint Francis

This pilgrimage, celebrating the 800th anniversary of the transitus (passing into eternal life) of Saint Francis of Assisi in 1226, holds profound historical and spiritual significance for both the global Church and local Catholics, and serves as a timely call for peace, reviving Saint Francis’ core messages of universal fraternity and peace-building.

By weaving through seven holy sites within our diocese, this spiritual event visually models the solidarity and rich diversity of the local Church in Oakland. It beautifully affirms our call to be one in the Lord, united under the guidance of Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, as our shepherd and spiritual father.

It began as a mission church for immigrants from Ireland and Spanish-speaking nations. 125 years after it officially became a parish, it’s now ministering to those immigrants’ descendants in their original homelands through digital means, as well as in-person for 5,700 families registered in the parish from across the East Bay.

The Catholic Community of Pleasanton (CCOP) is celebrating its 125th year as a parish, exactly half the length of America’s 250 years, with the pinnacle celebration happening this Sunday, Aug. 30 with a Mass and large reception.
