On Tuesday, June 30th, at 6:30 pm, Gulf of Maine Books will be hosting Norman Fischer for a reading of his poetry.

Fischer has been a Zen Buddhist priest for nearly 30 years, serving as abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center and founding and teaching at the Everyday Zen Foundation. Among many other books on Zen and poetry, he wrote Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong, which was one of our study group selections.

Gulf of Maine Books is at 134 Maine Street in Brunswick.

Winter sesshin is coming up next month: Wednesday, January 7th–Sunday, January 11th. It includes a rigorous schedule of silent seated meditation, daisan, chanting services, work practice, dharma talks, and formal oryoki meals. In addition, Greg will have his tokudo ceremony on Sunday.

Treetop Holiday Sittings Canceled

Our Wednesday sits on Christmas Eve (December 24) and New Year’s Eve (December 31) have been canceled.

This Saturday, October 4th, Vera Kaplan, a well-known Hudson Valley artist and writer, will meet with us to share in service and zazen and offer a dharma talk based on her many years of Zen practice.

Vera lived in Japan for seven months, spending five months of that time living a monastic daily life and studying with Gien Inoue, roshi at Ryūsen-ji Temple.

She has great stories to share and is open to answering questions.

As usual, our Saturday-morning sit will begin at 9:00 a.m. and can be attended via Zoom for those who can't make it in person. Click here to join the Zoom meeting:

Join us this Saturday, May 17th, for a talk by Ankeney Weitz on the many images of Buddhist deities at Treetop. Ankeney's talk will be between zazen periods immediately following service at 9:00 a.m.

Ankeney is the Ziskind professor of East Asian studies and art at Colby College.
