Please mark your calendars for our Bay Association Fall Meeting, which is our annual meeting of clergy and delegates from all our member churches, as well as chaplains and clergy serving in other local settings. We'll review our work of the past year, engage in a worship experience, look ahead to what's coming next, and elect our Bay Association Executive Board members for 2027. Clergy and Church Vitality Grant Fund
Deadline for this round is September 30!

Our NCNC UCC has revitalized this fund to support clergy and churches. The new funding comes from a gift to the Conference plus a draw from the interest of the NCNC Endowment Fund. Grants are disbursed twice annually, with applications due on March 31 and September 30 each year. The grants are determined and delivered the following month. Rev. Rhina founded Ministerio Latino, a Spanish-speaking Open and Affirming congregation, in 2011. Born in El Salvador, she emigrated to the U.S. at age 14 and was undocumented during her first three years here. She knows firsthand the challenges of belonging to an invisible community.

A graduate of Hofstra University Law School, she was a labor attorney for several years and aided in recouping thousands of dollars in unpaid wages for immigrant workers. She obtained a Masters of Divinity from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, and has worked in the nonprofit sector for over 25 years as an activist, community organizer and manager. She published her first book in Spanish: "En mi Corazón, un Volcán" is about her family and memories growing up in El Salvador during the 80’s and her journey north.

Joins Backpack Drive led by Monument Crisis Center
Each Monday – Wednesday from July 6-22, 9am-12pm and 1-3pm
Drop off at MCC, 1990 Market Street, Concord

This nonprofit family resource center is gathering and distributing “fully-loaded” backpacks for at-risk students, grades K-12. MCC’s client families register their children for a new backpack complete with all the supplies needed to succeed. Then on Backpack Day, children choose their own fully-loaded backpack to kick off the school year. For those who find it easier to make a cash donation, a $75 contribution will provide a new backpack filled with school supplies for underserved students. All are invited to attend the service and reception! Clergy are invited to robe for the service. Pastor Tomoko began serving at Sycamore in the summer of 2023, and her role has gradually expanded over time. Initially, her ministry focused primarily on the Japanese-speaking congregation. Beginning in March 2024, her responsibilities expanded to include the English-speaking congregation, as part of Sycamore’s movement toward becoming “One Church.” She has Lay Ministerial Standing with the NCNC UCC for this new Call.

Dr. Shariati has been an active member of the Bahá’i Faith community her whole life. She previously served as a member of the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’is of Contra Costa County Central and is now a member of the community’s Area Teaching Committee, collaborating with local community members to plan and coordinate grassroots educational and service-oriented initiatives that promote unity, community building, and spiritual development.

Dr. Shariati began her involvement with the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County (I4C) through the organization’s ICARE program, helping to put together food distribution service projects. I4C is dedicated to fostering understanding, cooperation, and service among diverse religious and spiritual communities in Contra Costa County. As the current secretary of I4C’s governing board, she assists in organizing community programs and events that strengthen relationships among faith communities and advance mutual respect and cooperation.

Dr. Shariati helped establish and co-manage (and now serves as a volunteer dentist for) Dentists on Wheels, a non-profit organization based in Pittsburg, CA that provides free, comprehensive dental services and access to community resources to uninsured adults in and around Contra Costa County. As a general dentist at the nonprofit organization LifeLong Medical Care, she is is passionate about serving the underserved.
