All are invited to attend the service and reception! Clergy are invited to robe for the service. Pastor Tomoko began serving at Sycamore in the summer of 2023, and her role has gradually expanded over time. Initially, her ministry focused primarily on the Japanese-speaking congregation. Beginning in March 2024, her responsibilities expanded to include the English-speaking congregation, as part of Sycamore’s movement toward becoming “One Church.” She has Lay Ministerial Standing with the NCNC UCC for this new Call.

Dr. Shariati has been an active member of the Bahá’i Faith community her whole life. She previously served as a member of the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’is of Contra Costa County Central and is now a member of the community’s Area Teaching Committee, collaborating with local community members to plan and coordinate grassroots educational and service-oriented initiatives that promote unity, community building, and spiritual development.

Dr. Shariati began her involvement with the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County (I4C) through the organization’s ICARE program, helping to put together food distribution service projects. I4C is dedicated to fostering understanding, cooperation, and service among diverse religious and spiritual communities in Contra Costa County. As the current secretary of I4C’s governing board, she assists in organizing community programs and events that strengthen relationships among faith communities and advance mutual respect and cooperation.

Dr. Shariati helped establish and co-manage (and now serves as a volunteer dentist for) Dentists on Wheels, a non-profit organization based in Pittsburg, CA that provides free, comprehensive dental services and access to community resources to uninsured adults in and around Contra Costa County. As a general dentist at the nonprofit organization LifeLong Medical Care, she is is passionate about serving the underserved.

With the approach of Juneteenth, we are reminded that this observance is not only historical—it is deeply theological. It proclaims God’s enduring promise of liberation, even when justice is delayed, and calls us to continued work toward equity and healing.

Through the People’s Prayers for Peace initiative, prayers are being gathered for the day, prayers that speak truth, lament, hope, and commitment to justice.

The goal is to share 48 prayers—one every half hour throughout the day—creating a communal offering of prayer grounded in faith and social justice.

You might consider offering a prayer that reflects:
--Juneteenth as a sacred witness to freedom delayed but not denied
--The intersection of prayer, justice, and liberation
--The ongoing call to confront systemic racism
--God’s vision for peace rooted in justice

"Spiritual Lessons That I Learned on My Travels"
This Sunday, June 7, at 10am

Fresh from their extended tour around the Pacific Rim (including Hawaii, French Polynesia, Bali, Japan, and many more countries and destinations), Dr. Hastings-Flegel and her husband Bob have returned with stories to tell.

While traveling, Dr. Hastings-Flegel conducted Sunday morning services on board, complete with liturgy and music. One service was attended by upwards of 200 passengers and crew.

Dr. Hastings-Flegel received her Masters in Biblical Languages at Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley), her Master of Divinity at the Pacific School of Religion (Berkeley), and her Doctorate in Musical Arts (organ) at Stanford. She has served in music minister roles at St. Ignatius Catholic Church (Antioch), Grace Presbyterian Church (Walnut Creek), East County Shared Ministry (Pittsburg), Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (Concord) and Covenant Presbyterian Church (Palo Alto). She also interned in pastor roles at Grace Presbyterian and Community Presbyterian Churches.

She served on Presbyterian Hymnal Committee from 2008 to 2012 to help create the first new Presbyterian hymnal since 1990. She has directed chancel, handbell and youth choirs and served as organist in numerous venues, and also plays cello. She currently serves with the Worship + Welcome & Marketing Team at ECSM.

“The opportunity to see so many expressions of faith and spiritual practices in the world was a transforming and enlightening experience,” commented Dr. Hastings- Flegel. “It is awe-inspiring to see the interconnectedness from so many directions. I’m excited to be able to share some of those experiences with my church family.”

Born in Bogota, Colombia, Marroquin was raised in the Bay Area, and currently lives in Pittsburg with his wife, Jennifer. Eleven years ago, he co-created Peaceful Warriors, a support group for men of color that prioritizes creating safe spaces for connecting and processing emotions. He draws from his personal experiences to support men struggling with substance abuse and generational trauma.

In addition to monthly healing circles in San Francisco and Oakland, Luis and his colleague, Jorge DePaz, use sound healing and drumming as medicine. Luis also established weekly men of color support groups in Concord and Antioch through NAMI Contra Costa. He uses community rhythm drumming to engage with families at resource fairs, schools, and parks. Luis hopes to expand his work with Peaceful Warriors and NAMI throughout Contra Costa to inspire other men to heal and build support groups in their own communities.

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the U.S. since 1949, and features many events, screenings and opportunities designed to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and promote support for mental wellbeing. Founded by Mental Health America, the awareness also highlights the importance of early intervention and community support.
