Imani Community Church

Imani Community Church Morning Worship: Sundays @ 10:30 am A Word from Rev. Dr. George C. L. Cummings -

We are a progressive congregation that has faith to change our world.

I am excited about how God has used us during the last sixteen years to be a living communal witness to the faith and hope that we have in Jesus Christ – The Light of the World. We believe that God has granted us a faith that calls us to commitment and action in the world in order to minister to the social, spiritual, physical, psychological, political and economic needs of our community. At Imani

, we have a three-part approach to spiritual growth: in-reach, up-reach and outreach. Key components of our in-reach are the fellowship opportunities and discipleship training that is necessary to grow mature disciples to carry out the mission of the church. Participation in our membership classes, discipleship classes and small groups provides each Imani member with an effective way of developing as spiritually mature Christians. Up-reach includes regular participation in the worship, prayer and meditation that is essential to nurturing one's spiritual life. These dimensions of our communal commitment provide the spiritual grounding and resources necessary to be fruitful in one’s Christian walk. Outreach opportunities help us to respond effectively to the many challenges facing our families and our community. Through local mission Imani members bear witness to the community that is around us. Through international mission to Costa Rica and South Africa the church seeks to extend our witness to the love of God beyond our immediate communities and into the world. If you have a heart for mission in the world, I invite you to join our congregation. When the people of God work together to do that which God has called us to do, then we can receive the words of the prophet Isaiah, who said...

"If you offer your food to the hungry, and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise with the darkness, and your gloom will be like the noonday. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong, and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. You shall raise up the foundations of many generations, you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in." Isaiah 58:10-12 (NRSV)

We are called as people of faith to act to transform the world. Peace,

Pastor Cummings

What a beautiful Sunday at Imani Community Church!

We were honored to welcome our very own Dr. Sarai Crain as our guest preacher, who always comes with a powerful word. 🙌🏾

As our Imani kids begin another year of learning and growing, we continue to pray over every student at every level of education—from our little ones just beginning their school journey, to elementary, middle, and high school students, college students, graduate students, and everyone pursuing their next level. 🎓📖

Imani Family, let’s continue to cover our children in prayer all year long. 💛🙏🏾

Happy Pride Month from Imani Community Church! 🌈✨

As we kick off June, we proudly celebrate and affirm our LGBTQ+ community. We stand firmly behind the powerful words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu:

“I would not worship a god who is homophobic.”

At Imani, we believe in a God of radical love and grace who embraces us exactly as we are. You are valued, you are divine, and you belong here. 🫶🏾🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

🔥 The Fire This Time: From the Scars to the Spark ✨

What a powerful at Imani! Associate Minister Rev. Rob Newells-Newton brought a transformative word from Acts 2:1–4, challenging us to move from fear to prophetic faith. 🕊️

Here is your quick sermon recap:
🔥 Holy Liberation: God’s fire clears out old trauma to ignite new truth.
🏛️ New Foundation: Stop patching up systemic injustice—step into Spirit-led action.
👟 Faith in Motion: Take the fire from the pews straight to the streets!

🇺🇸 Day Reflection:
Today, we honor those who sacrificed for a country that hasn't always honored them. We remember that Memorial Day was birthed in 1865 by formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston, SC, to honor fallen Union soldiers. 🖤

We are keeping our Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Jeremy McCants, and the first family in our prayers as they travel. Have a safe, restful, and blessed Memorial Day, Imani family! 🙏🏾

What a mighty, spirit-filled Sunday morning at Imani Community Church! Our sanctuary was truly charged with purpose today.

We were deeply honored to welcome a powerful delegation from the Oakland NAACP Chapter, including California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley N. Weber, who brought a righteous and urgent word on the history and future of Voting Rights in America.

As Dr. Weber reminded us so powerfully:
👉🏾 “This election is no joke.”
👉🏾 “It’s not just about saving us in California. It’s about saving this nation and this world.”
👉🏾 “It is our time. It is our voice.”

That fire kept burning right into the message as Pastor Jey brought the house down with his sermon, "Do not be Alarmed, But I Smell Gas (I'm Cooking with Gas)" from Luke 24:44-53. We learned that true empowerment means releasing the divine fire already inside us and making our testimony visible to the world. We can't conceal our praise, and we can't sit back—we have to be bold enough to lead our people out!

Imani, the charge has been given. Let’s take the fire we caught in the pews today out into the streets, to the polls, and into our communities. We must push forward! ✊🏾🔥
