It's not surprising that there have not been more collective memorials in the US, given the government's failure to manage the pandemic. Here's a memorial in Detroit in September. Rest in Power, loved ones.

Detroit hosted 15 different funeral processions to honor the more than 1,000 people who have died from COVID-19 in the city on Monday.

Whether through gross incompetence or deliberate strategy, the president and his advisers left the virus to run amok, allowed Americans to get sick, and punted the consequences to the health-care system. And they did so repeatedly, even after the ordeal of the spring, after the playbook for controlling the virus became clear, and despite months of warnings about a fall surge.

Not even the best-prepared hospital can compensate for an unchecked pandemic. UNMC’s preparations didn’t fail so much as the U.S. created a situation in which hospitals could not possibly succeed. “We can prepare over and over for a wave of patients,” says Cawcutt, “but we can’t prepare for a tsunami.”

We apologize for falling behind on posts. The lives lost to COVID-19 has been overwhelming. We are now at over 2,000 deaths per day and surpassed a quarter of a million deaths last week. While elders, workers, and people of color, are still disproportionately impacted, the virus is spreading to the young, healthy, & well off now, too. And there is clearly no end in sight.

The number of COVID-19 cases reported in the United States has risen for the fourth straight day and the one-day death toll is approaching numbers not seen since the spring, according to Johns Hopkins University.

He and his twin brother volunteered when they were 18 and had remained on the job ever since. He died of the coronavirus.

As a football player, he caught a pass to win the state title for his South Carolina high school. He was later a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals. He died of complications of Covid-19.
