DISCERNING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD AND RIGHT
A crucial step to spiritual effectiveness is the ability to discern not just between right and wrong, but between good and God’s best.
Proverbs 14:12 cautions, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death."
Right focuses on rules, obligations, and the correctness of an action itself,
Good focuses on outcomes, well-being, and what makes life valuable.
The Right (Rules and Duties)
* Definition: What you ought to do according to a rule, law, or moral duty.
* Focus: The action itself, regardless of the final outcome.
The Good (Outcomes and Value)
* Definition: What is worth having, creating, or achieving.
* Focus: The results, happiness, and overall well-being produced by an action.
Effective living involves discerning the subtle differences between good opportunities and divinely appointed paths.
Many Christ-followers settle for good choices rather than discerning God's specific purpose for them. Romans 12:2 challenges us: “...be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Renewal through God’s Word sharpens your spiritual discernment, enabling you to differentiate between what merely seems good and what God truly desires for you.
We must know and understand that every good opportunity is not God's opportunity for you.
Consider Paul, who discerned clearly when God permitted him to preach in certain places and restrained him from others (Acts 16:6-7).
Paul’s sensitivity to the Spirit ensured maximum effectiveness in his ministry.
Let’s mimic Paul by establishing sensitivity in the Holy Spirit (I had to specific here) so we may experience maximum effectiveness in every facet of our lives.
Evaluate your discernment today. Are your choices guided merely by what looks good, or are they rooted in clear direction from God?
Cultivate the habit of seeking God’s guidance even in seemingly good opportunities, ensuring alignment with His perfect will.
THOUGHT TO PONDER:
1. Are you settling for good opportunities instead of seeking God’s best?
2. How can you sharpen your discernment to recognise and pursue His perfect will?
PRAYER:
Father, give me discernment to choose Your best above what merely seems good. Renew my mind through Your Word to follow Your precise direction. In Jesus' name, Amen.
