Welcome back to normal Sunday main meetings!!! I really hope to see everyone tomorrow, I can't wait to begin this new series on Friendship and Love for the month of February. This series was born out of my appreciation for Jonathan - David's best friend - and how much I wished things could have turned out differently for him.
One of my favorite depictions in all the stories we have about David is in 1 Samuel 20 when Jonathan uses his bow and arrow to alert David that Saul wanted to kill him. Jonathan sends his servant away in order to share one final farewell with his friend. In verse 41, a verse that still makes me cry to read, it says that David fell to the ground in sorrow, Jonathan with him, they embraced, kissed, and cried, "with David crying the most."
Such a strange thing to add into the Scripture, this idea that both men wept at the brokeness of the kingdom, the wedge Saul placed between them as friends, and this final farewell which by all indications grieved David so deeply, even more deeply than Jonathan. And we later see, when David learns of Jonathan's death, David would weep again, tear his clothes, and refuse to eat, saying that his love for Jonathan surpassed even his love of women. The friendship was for David the highest form of love, spiritual and incorruptible.
A touching story for sure, one that we will unpack together this week. We all want Jonathan's in our lives -- and the key to finding our Jonathan forever friendships comes when we learn to be like Jonathan to people around us. I hope I can make it through the sermon without crying! This story means so much to me. And so do each of you!
See you at 11AM at the Grove Theater!
