First United Methodist Church began as a loose gathering of displaced Methodists who had relocated to the new secret government-owned town of Oak Ridge, TN around 1942. They were served by a young pastor named Robert Lundy, who led early Sunday meetings in the town's movie theater - which they would transform into a worship space, and then promptly back before the Sunday matinee began. The congreg

ation was made up of young 20 and 30 somethings, who had accepted the mysterious task of working on an unknown project in an unknown place during World War II. Many of these founding worshipers remain in Oak Ridge, and have formed the backbone of First UMC for its 70 years. After the war ended, the US government allotted space for each of the church communities to build. FUMC completed the construction of most of the current building in 1958, as one can see on the cornerstone that resides on the building below the Memorial Garden. An additional wing, including the Multipurpose Room (Gym) was added in the 1970s. In 2008, Trinity United Methodist church on the west side of Oak Ridge decided to merge with FUMC, enabling the congregations to grow stronger and to use the assets from the Trinity community for the betterment of Oak Ridge. The church has grown in many ways since its beginnings - especially in helping to foster new initiatives in the Oak Ridge community like the annual Earth Day Festival, the Oak Ridge Free Medical Clinic, and our newest initiative using the former Trinity UMC Church facilities, the Trinity Outreach Center.

Rainbow Sunday is coming, and you’re invited to a day overflowing with joy, color, and courageous love. On June 14, we’ll celebrate the diversity of God’s creation, honoring the Christ who embraced outcasts, lifted the marginalized, and defied the boundaries of exclusion. The morning begins with a full breakfast at 8:45 in the Multipurpose Room, followed by one vibrant combined worship service at 11:00 in the Sanctuary, featuring the Equality Chorus, our Choir, and Contemporary Worship Band. Rev. Caryl Russell will bring a message of hope, justice, and belonging. Come shine with us, your presence makes the rainbow brighter.

One person said tonight, “I walked in tonight feeling grumpy. I’m leaving in a good mood.” Peace be with you.

Meet the Finance Team on Sunday

Sunday is "Meet the Finance Department Day!" Everyone is invited to come to the Fellowship Hall following the 8:45 a.m. service and throughout the morning. You will be able to:

Meet the Finance committee, volunteers, and staff members
Update your information in our church database, Realm
Get set up in our new online directory, Realm Connect, and learn how to access your information quickly and easily

On Sunday, everyone with an active email address in the church database will receive an invitation to Realm Connect. Through Realm Connect, you will be able to update and add personal information on your own, upload profile pictures, view your financial statements and giving at any time, and see pictures and contact information for other church members (an online, on-demand church directory)!
