Labor Day Mass

On Monday, September 7, Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 AM at Saint Giles Church, and at 8:30 AM at Saint Edmund Church. Please join us as we ask God’s favor upon all workers, thank God for human labor, and celebrate the dignity of the worker.

There will not be a 6:30 AM Mass at Saint Giles on September 7.

Lord we pause to thank you for today. We often keep so busy and are running all day long. You are always at our side. Be with us this night. We entrust to your love and mercy all those that have asked us to pray for them. Hear their prayers this night Grant us a too a restful night and peaceful sleep. Amen.

Señor, hacemos una pausa para darte gracias por el día de hoy. A menudo estamos muy ocupados y corriendo de un lado a otro durante todo el día. Tú siempre estás a nuestro lado. Acompáñanos esta noche. Ponemos en tus manos, con amor y misericordia, a todos aquellos que nos han pedido que oremos por ellos. Escucha sus oraciones esta noche. Concédenos también una noche de descanso y un sueño tranquilo. Amén.

Today is the feast of St. Giles

Despite the fact that much about Saint Giles is shrouded in mystery, we can say that he was one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages. Likely, he was born in the first half of the seventh century in southeastern France. That is where he built a monastery that became a popular stopping-off point for pilgrims making their way to Compostela in Spain, and the Holy Land.

In England, many ancient churches and hospitals were dedicated to Saint Giles. One of the sections of the city of Brussels is named after him. In Germany, Giles was included among the so-called 14 Holy Helpers, a popular group of saints to whom people prayed, especially for recovery from disease, and for strength at the hour of death.

The Centennial of the St Giles campus began today with a mass presided by Cardinal Blase Cupich. The new music director Thomas Jefferson accompanied by renowned local musicians choirs and cantors prayerfully lifted our hearts and minds to God. The Mass was followed by a reception in McDonough hall with more than 400 people. It was a magnificent day to recall how God’s faithfulness to us. It was also a tribute to Fr Carl for his tireless dedication to the faith community of St Giles, now St Catherine-St Lucy and St Giles.

JOY

Joy does not arrive with a fanfare,
on a red carpet,
strewn with the flowers of a perfect life

Joy sneaks in,
as you pour a cup of coffee,
watching the sunlight
hit your favourite tree -
just right

And you usher joy away,
because you are not ready for her,
your house, is not as it should be,
for such a distinguished guest


But joy cares nothing for your messy home,
or your bank-balance,
or your waistline

You see, joy is supposed to slither through
the cracks of your imperfect life

That’s how joy works….

You cannot truly invite her,
you can only be ready when she appears,
and hug her with meaning

Because in this…very moment
joy…chose…you
