Statement from Chabad-Lubavitch of Michigan

Chabad-Lubavitch of Michigan is deeply shocked and saddened by the violent attack that took place at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. This was an attack against all Jews and the entire Jewish community. We are one people, brothers and sisters, and when any part of our people is targeted, we all feel it.

Our hearts and minds are with all those who were present in the building and experienced such frightening moments.

We are profoundly grateful to the Almighty for the open miracles that we witnessed today. With so many children and members of the community present, it is a tremendous blessing that all those in the building were spared from harm. We also extend our prayers for a full and speedy recovery to the synagogue’s security director who was injured while courageously protecting others.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that the Jewish response to darkness is not retreat, but the strengthening of light. As Jews, we stand resilient and proud of our identity. Moments like these call upon all of us to come together, strengthen our faith and unity, and increase acts of goodness and kindness. The Rebbe often emphasized that even a small amount of light can dispel a great deal of darkness, and therefore our response must always be to increase light in the world. By deepening our connection to Judaism, performing mitzvot, and sharing that light with others, we ensure that goodness prevails.

As we approach the holiday of Passover, the festival of freedom and the birth of our nation, Chabad-Lubavitch of Michigan encourages the community to respond in a positive and meaningful way. This year especially, we should ensure that every Jew has the opportunity to celebrate the Seder and partake of handmade Shemurah matzah, so that all can experience the message of freedom and Jewish pride.

May this Passover usher in a time of true freedom, peace, and harmony for the Jewish people everywhere, our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land and throughout the world, and for all humanity, with the coming of Mashiach speedily in our days.

Please reach out to any of the Chabad centers listed below to arrange a place at a Passover Seder or to receive handmade Shmurah Matzah for the holiday. Our Chabad centers across Michigan are here to help every Jew celebrate Passover in a meaningful and welcoming way.

Statement from Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan:

As Chanukah is observed, Jewish communities around the world are responding to moments of pain and uncertainty with renewed strength, unity, and resilience. In the wake of troubling events globally, including the recent attack in Bondi Beach, there were two incidents at our Lansing center, Chabad at Michigan State University, during the first days of Chanukah.

The first incident took place when an individual intentionally threw a rock through a window of the Chabad Jewish Student Center at Michigan State University. A second incident occurred the following night when antisemitic graffiti was painted on the door of the same building. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that both incidents are being investigated as hate crimes.

No one was inside the building at the time of either incident. The leadership of Chabad at MSU is grateful for the swift response and continued cooperation of the East Lansing Police Department and University administration. The investigation remains active.

Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan is a statewide Jewish educational and outreach organization that serves individuals and families of all backgrounds through a network of 30 Chabad centers, campus programs, synagogues, educational initiatives, and community events. Its mission is rooted in strengthening Jewish identity, fostering connection, and providing spiritual, educational, and humanitarian support across Michigan.

As the Jewish community enters the final days of Chanukah, Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan is especially mindful of this year’s theme echoed throughout the state through Menorah in the D: illuminating light from darkness. Each additional flame serves as a reminder that even a small light can dispel great darkness—and that hope, faith, and Jewish pride grow stronger when shared publicly and proudly. This message—to respond to darkness by increasing light—is one the Jewish people have learned from our dear Rebbe.

Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan encourages community members to continue lighting their menorahs at home and participating in public menorah lightings throughout the week at our centers across Michigan as a visible affirmation of Jewish resilience and unity. For a full listing of menorah lightings, please visit menorahinthed.com/menorahlightings

Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan extends its sincere gratitude to the community for the outpouring of support. This solidarity sends a powerful message to students, families, and the broader Spartan community that the light of Chanukah will always shine brighter than fear.
