Daily devotional assignments and reflection:
1. Matthew 1-4. Consider the ways that Matthew connects events in the life of Jesus and his teachings to the Hebrew Scriptures. How does Matthew root Jesus in the story of God's people?
2. Luke 1-4. Luke shifts focus from the "Jewish nation" to the "People of God," a more inclusive approach. How does Luke transform God's promises as seen through Jesus? 3. Acts 2: 22-39, 3:13-26, Galatians 3. These three passages take three different angles to look at Jesus as a part of God's larger plan. Note connections to God's plan and the promises that come to us through Jesus.
4. John 1, Hebrews 1-2. These are big claims about Jesus. What do they say about the connection between encountering Jesus and knowing God?
5. John 6: 22-71, Acts 9:1-31. These stories show strong reactions to Jesus and claims about his identity and significance. Why do you suppose they react either strongly positively or negatively? What are the inroads and roadblocks that we find ourselves for responding to Jesus?

"Who do you say that I am?" Jesus asked the disciples this question long ago, and we are still deciding for ourselves today. What we call the New Testament is the result of many people writing their answers to that question. There are writings that we not included -- what is included was helpful to early Christians, and became authoratative for generations.
