Maaloula is one of the last places on earth where ๐๐ซ๐๐ฆ๐๐ข๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ is still spoken. On the eve of the feast, they carry the Cross through the streets and light fires on the surrounding mountains. This tradition is linked to ๐๐ญ. ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐, ๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐, who discovered the ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ in Jerusalem, the news was signaled back to Constantinople through a chain of mountain top fires and the cliffs of Maaloula carried that light across the region.
Across the East, Christians light crosses above their homes and villages during the feast. Many also light bonfires on hills and mountain peaks, often with a cross in view.
These images of Christians lifting the Cross in Syria are a living reminder that the Cross is not only an ancient relic.
