One of the most beautiful moments in all of Scripture is what Jesus says to this little girl.

Not a command barked from a distance.

Not a display of power without compassion.

He takes her by the hand and says,

"Honey, it's time to get up."

That's our Savior.

Standing face-to-face with death itself, Jesus is both infinitely powerful and unbelievably tender.

He speaks to a little girl the way a loving parent speaks to a child.

And death obeys Him.

Because when Jesus has you by the hand, death is no longer the end.

It's only sleep before resurrection.

The same Jesus who commands the grave is the same Jesus who loves His children with perfect tenderness.

Unlike every earthly parent, He never fails.

He never makes a mistake.

He never lets go.

He never stops loving those who belong to Him.

So why are we so quick to doubt Him?

Why are we so eager to rush Him?

Why do we struggle to trust the One whose power is matched only by His love?

The hand that raised that little girl is the same hand that holds every believer today.

The Gospel is the great exchange.

Jesus was forsaken so we could be forgiven.

Jesus was crushed so we could be made whole.

Jesus died so we could live.

Jesus went into the grave so we could walk out of it.

Every part of the cross tells the same story:

He took what we deserved and gave us what we never could earn.

When Jesus cried out in abandonment, it wasn't because the Father had lost control.

It was the plan all along.

The Son was separated so sinners could be brought near.

The Shepherd laid down His life for the sheep.

And now, because of what Christ has done, those who belong to Him are held forever.

Nothing can sn**ch them from His hand.

Not suffering.

Not failure.

Not fear.

Not even death itself.

So when we see Jesus take a little girl by the hand and raise her to life, we're seeing a glimpse of what He's done for all who trust Him.

The same hand that was pierced for our sins is the hand that now holds us securely.

And He never lets go.

What if the man in Mark 5 is meant to feel uncomfortably familiar?

Broken.
Bound.
Ashamed.

Trying everything, yet unable to find freedom.

Every chain failed.

Every attempt to control the chaos failed.

Every worldly solution came up empty.

And maybe you've felt that too.

That lingering struggle you can't seem to shake.

That temptation that keeps returning.

That shame that convinces you to hide.

That feeling that if you could just find the right plan, the right advice, the right answer, maybe then you'd finally have peace.

But the Bible says that's the human condition apart from Christ.

Not just struggling.

Separated from God.

Like Adam in the garden.

After he sinned, Adam didn't go searching for God.

He hid.

Ashamed.
Afraid.
Exposed.

And that's what sin still does.

It convinces us to hide.

To cover up.

To look everywhere for relief except the One who can actually save us.

But the good news of the Gospel is that God pursues people who hide.

He pursued Adam.

He pursued the man among the tombs.

And He still pursues sinners today.

Because the answer was never going to be found within yourself.

Have you ever felt trapped by something you couldn't fix?

You try harder.
You make new promises.
You look for better solutions.

And yet the same struggle keeps showing up.

The same temptation.
The same shame.
The same emptiness.

That's the picture we see in Mark 5.

A man isolated.
Broken.
Out of control.

No chain could hold him.

No person could help him.

Nothing in this world could free him from what held him captive.

And maybe that's why this story feels so familiar.

Because apart from Christ, that's all of us.

Trying to find peace in ourselves.

Trying to manage what only God can heal.

Trying to overcome with human strength what requires divine power.

The truth is, there is no self-help solution for a heart that needs saving.

No amount of effort can remove our guilt.

No amount of religion can cleanse our shame.

No amount of willpower can break every chain.

We don't need better chains.

We need a Savior.

And that's exactly who Jesus came to be.

Maybe you're exhausted from trying to keep it all together.

Managing the temptation.
Controlling the struggle.
Hiding the shame.

Searching for peace in one more achievement, one more relationship, one more distraction.

And still finding yourself empty.

The Bible says that's not just your story.

That's humanity's story.

From the very beginning, when Adam sinned, he didn't run toward God.

He hid.

Ashamed.
Broken.
Afraid.

And ever since then, we've been doing the same thing.

Hiding behind success.
Hiding behind religion.
Hiding behind our own version of control.

But here's the good news:

God comes looking for people who hide.

Adam hid. God pursued him.

The man in Mark 5 hid among the tombs. Jesus pursued him.

And maybe today, you're not looking for Jesus at all.

Maybe you're hiding from Him.

You can even hide in church.

But Jesus is a seeking Savior.

He comes after the lost.

He comes after the broken.

He comes after those who cannot save themselves.

And when He finds them, He doesn't leave them the way He found them.

He sets them free.

The good news of the Gospel is not that you found Jesus.

It's that Jesus came looking for you.

From the very beginning, that's been the story.

Adam sinned.
Adam hid.
Adam ran.

And God came looking for him.

In Mark 5, the same thing happens.

A broken man sits isolated among the tombs.

Not searching for Jesus.

Not pursuing God.

Hiding.

And yet Jesus crosses a sea, walks onto the shore, and comes directly to him.

That's grace.

Because left to ourselves, we don't naturally run toward God.

We hide.

Behind success.
Behind religion.
Behind distractions.
Behind shame.

But Jesus is a seeking Savior.

He enters darkness.

He pursues the lost.

He walks into places no one else will go.

And when He finds us, He doesn't just offer advice.

He brings freedom.

He brings life.

He brings salvation.

Maybe today you feel far from God.

Maybe you've been running.

Maybe you've been hiding.

The good news is that Jesus is still in the business of seeking and saving the lost.

And no darkness is too deep for Him to find you there.

Maybe the most uncomfortable part of Mark 5...

Is realizing we're not just reading about that man.

We're reading about ourselves.

Broken.
Bound.
Unable to free ourselves.

Not just struggling on the outside—

Broken on the inside.

That's the Bible's diagnosis of the human heart.

The problem isn't merely what we've done.

The problem is what we are apart from Christ.

And that's why religion can never save us.

More rules won't fix a dead heart.

More rituals won't break our chains.

More effort won't make us clean.

So when Jesus meets this man, He doesn't hand him a religious checklist.

He doesn't say, "Clean yourself up and come back."

He doesn't tell him to earn his freedom.

He sets him free.

That's the Gospel.

Jesus doesn't come for people who have it all together.

He comes for people who know they don't.

People who need more than advice.

People who need a Savior.

And the good news is that the same Jesus who delivered that man is still setting people free today.
