The Nunda Soldiers’ Monument in Oakwood Cemetery is ready for this year’s Memorial Day ceremony.

Several improvements have been made this spring to the memorial area in Section G. The 1897 Soldiers’ Monument was repointed by John White, a master mason. The new walkway to the memorial plaque was installed by Jordan James of Concrete Cowboy LLC. Later this year, the nearby roadway will also undergo much-needed improvement.

Funding for these improvements was made possible through a generous bequest left to Oakwood Cemetery by veteran John Osajca, who passed away in 2010 and is buried in Section K. Over the past decade, the Cemetery Association has carefully managed and invested these funds so they could continue to support preservation and improvement projects at Oakwood Cemetery well into the future.

We thank John White and Jordy James for their outstanding work!

Saturday is the New York State "Day of Caring" for local cemeteries - a chance to volunteer to help your local non profit cemetery.

If you would like to help Oakwood with our spring clean up, we have some light tasks that folks of all ages can help with. We will be cleaning cemetery signs, picking up pine cones, and some light raking and picking up sticks. All you need to bring are some gloves! Meet at the West Street Entrance. For more information call or text 465-0971 or message us!
Meet at 1pm we will work until 3 pm, weather permitting.

Note: This event was originally scheduled to start at 10 AM. We moved it to the afternoon so not to conflict with the Village's Arbor Day Celebration at Kiwanis Park.

Oakwood Cemetery is beginning to awaken for another year!

The gates are now open, and spring cleanup is underway. On Tuesday, our mowing contractor—Tony Mess of kNOw Mess Lawn Services of Canaseraga—and his crew will return to begin work on the grounds. In addition to clearing leaves and branches in preparation for the first mowing and trimming, they will also be removing Christmas wreaths and other decorations that are worn or broken. If you have items you wish to keep, please plan to pick them up soon.

Work is also beginning on several special projects. The first started today: repair and repointing of the Soldiers’ Monument in Section G. The 1897 monument underwent a major restoration in 2015, with the expectation that periodic repointing would be needed over time. Stonemason John White—shown here starting the process—is well known in the area and no stranger to Oakwood, having previously worked on the West Street Gate and Vault with his father.

Additional projects, including tree work, are planned in the coming months, and we’ll keep you posted as they progress.

Thank you for helping us care for and preserve Oakwood Cemetery!

Oakwood Cemetery – Winter Road Closures

The annual winter closing of the West Street Gate and the main cemetery road will take place on Monday, December 15. The Gibbs Street entrance will temporarily remain open, as will the K roadway up to the first parking area between Sections K and L. This year, the L roadway will be closed just east of the parking area.

Please note that the Gibbs Street entrance may also be closed when weather and road conditions warrant. These closures are necessary due to snow and ice conditions and are intended to help prevent damage to cemetery grounds and vehicles.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
