it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast”

Daily Devotion - 6/2/26

Scripture -

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” - 1 Peter 5:6

Daily Devotion -

The beginning of chapter 5 in 1 Peter addresses the elders of the flock. They are to care for and watch over their people with a willingness to serve, not to use their position to control their flock. Both the young and the elders are called to be humble toward God, then to one another. God shows favor to those who are humble and lifts them up in due time.

Humility is interesting. One should refrain from calling oneself humble but should know how to exercise humility. Maintaining humility can be very difficult if we show a high aptitude or ability in an area, especially in leadership. The natural tendency is to control the direction of matters between people and a flock. God calls both elders and the younger to be servant leaders. Those who have humbled themselves get to higher positions with a humble heart because they know it is God who has lifted them up.

Prayer -

Dear Heavenly Father -

Help us be humble and wise, depending on Jesus in all that we do. He came to this earth “not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.” We chose Jesus as our example and give thanks and praise to God for the love we are given through Christ. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Daily Devotion - 6/1/26

Scripture -

“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” — James 4:8

Devotion -

In Chapter 4, James addresses the issue of Jewish believers quarreling among themselves. He describes how being in want drives people to fight and to ask God for things with wrong motives. They do not realize that a bond with worldly things puts them at odds with God. James assures the people that God is gracious, and if they resist the devil, he will flee from their presence. When we draw nearer to God, He is closer to us, and we can be in a relationship with Him, being cleansed by the power of Jesus Christ.

Jesus can make our paths straight. It may be difficult to address strongholds in our lives, and even embarrassing. But what is in darkness can be brought into the light in Christ, and break the chains of sin's hold. It is important that we find someone we trust and do life with, to hold us accountable; people we can share personal things with and ask for prayer. But it starts with humbling ourselves before the Lord, asking for forgiveness, and taking a step in faith to be better because of what Jesus has done for us.

Prayer -

Dear Heavenly Father,

As long as we are in the flesh, we will contend against it. We call on the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, and rebuke any strongholds that pull us away from You. Help us reflect on Your word and in humility submit to Your will. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Daily Devotion 5/31/26

Scripture -

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” – Romans 10:14

Devotion -

In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul expresses his desire for the Israelites' salvation. Paul understands that they had been zealous for God, but unfortunately, they went about it the wrong way. “They did not submit to God’s righteousness.” He adds that Jesus is the culmination of the law so that anyone who believes in Jesus is made righteous. It is not the kind of righteousness that judges who is going to heaven or hell; instead, the name and presence of Jesus is in the believer's mouth and heart, sharing the word and professing that Jesus is Lord. Paul asks this series of poignant questions in verse 14, for his readers to have a sense of the need among the Israelites. He knows that not all of them will accept the good news, but the people sharing the good news must share it anyway.

By breaking down this series of questions, we can see a natural progression in a person's belief in Jesus. Once they hear the word of God preached, some are confronted with their need for Christ and believe in their hearts that Jesus is Lord. Once they believe they can call on Jesus, depending on Him in all circumstances, being sanctified with the help of the Holy Spirit. It is so important for us to have sound teaching and preaching and to develop the evangelism muscle so that we can accurately share what the Bible says, so we can share who Jesus is. The Holy Spirit will give us the right words at the right time for the glory of God, but we have to take the step and share Jesus with the world.

Prayer -

Dear Heavenly Father,

We give thanks for all the pastors and leaders that You have blessed with a love for Your people. Please give all of us the heart to be sensitive to Your word, the mind to be careful in how it is understood and handled, and the Spirit to help us share who Jesus is. We hope and pray that many who are lost get to hear Your word and that those seeds are deeply rooted and grow to give you glory, in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Daily Devotion 5/30/26

Scripture -

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” — Acts 4:31

Devotion -

In Chapter 4, two of Jesus’ disciples, Peter and John, are taken over to the Sanhedrin to be interrogated by the high priests. The disciples boldly proclaimed that a healing that occurred was done by using the name of Jesus. They went on to argue that Jesus was the rejected stone that has become the cornerstone. After that, the high priests found themselves between a rock and a hard place; they tried to silence the disciples with threats, but the people were praising God. Once the disciples were released, they shared what had happened with their own people. All of them praised God, understanding that Jesus was the messiah. They prayed to God, asking Him to perform signs and wonders through the name of Jesus. This is when the place shook, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit speaking the word of God boldly.

Cynics and skeptics may claim that miracles and healings either don’t exist or can be explained away, and that's ok. Arguments can be set on either side, trying to prove or disprove a happening. That is not the point; these signs are, in fact, a will of God and a matter of faith. We do not perform signs and wonders because we want them. If these things are in accordance with God’s will, they will happen. We are to familiarize ourselves with God’s word, learning to discern through the Spirit, faithfully understanding that the Lord’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We exercise this knowledge by boldly proclaiming the name of Jesus through faith in Him, then observing and watching God work the signs and wonders.

Prayer -

Dear Heavenly Father,

These things bring a deeper appreciation for what it looks like to be in unity with Christ. We are all at different points in our pilgrimage where we understand the metaphorical aspects of faith, but these scriptures do not read like allegory. These things happened. Help us open up not only to signs and wonders but to the everyday miracle of the gift of faith in Christ, in Jesus’ name we pray.

Daily Devotion 5/29/26

Scripture -

“ In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” — Philippians 2:5

In chapter 2 of his letter to the church at Philippi, the apostle Paul expands on the concept of being united with Christ. He reasons through a series of if-then statements. The if statements are results of a relationship with Jesus, and the then statements are the implications of a commonly shared experience through Jesus. That is, the individual unity with Christ and its fruits should overflow and be mirrored in the corporate relationships of His followers.

It is very difficult to navigate relationships by intellect alone; faith is necessary to obtain and sustain long-term, healthy bonds. So, when people have been hurt in the past, they can become jaded and rightly so. It is normal to flinch relationally, as it is physically in response to pain. But Jesus doesn’t want us to miss out on His kingdom. As Paul goes on to say, the Lord “humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” We are called to be humble toward one another, caring for the interests of others instead of being consumed by our own, knowing that a brother or sister in Christ will be there to help on that end. Ideally, everyone’s need for fellowship can be met in humility and service toward one another as a result of faith and unity in Christ.

Prayer -

Dear Heavenly Father,

The only way we know what true humility looks like is because we have seen it in the works of Your Son, Jesus. We pray that You keep us humble and that we may serve our brothers and sisters in Christ, filling that need for fellowship in love. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Daily Devotion 2/28/26

Scripture -

“The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.” — Isaiah 40:8

Devotion -

Isaiah starts the chapter with a comforting message from the Lord. The time of punishment is passed, and now Jerusalem has been pardoned. There is the voice of one crying out in the wilderness to “Prepare the way of the Lord”; this is what is referred to when John the Baptist comes out of the wilderness and preaches repentance and proclaims that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. We can read the passage two ways. The first, in its context. The second in light of the New Testament. The prophetic message tells us that a voice will cry out, proclaiming that the Lord will one day save His people. In this verse, the grass is the flesh which withers, and the flower is all the loveliness of the flesh; the people are the grass which is frail and mortal. We may fade, but His word stands forever.

The prophetic messages in scripture speak of a time in the future, which, in some cases, is our past. We have the benefit of confirmation between what was prophesied and fulfilled in scripture. It can serve as evidence of God’s relationship with His people and for His glory. There are also prophecies that will be fulfilled. If we observe the prophetic messages that have come to pass and read of those that have yet to happen, we find ourselves feeling the weight of truth of our temporary presence on this earth. God’s word stands, and everything He has said has and will come to pass on His terms and in unexpected ways.

Prayer -

Dear heavenly Father,

You know all things and see us in our humanity. Rather than turn away in disgust, You have given us the way to truly live. We give thanks that Jesus is with us. We give thanks that the Holy Spirit helps us as we walk along the path carrying our cross and living in the hope we have in Christ. Give us spiritual strength as our bodies give way, and that blessed assurance that Your word endures forever. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Daily Devotion 5/27/26

Scripture -

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” — Romans 8:16

Devotion -

In his letter to the Romans, Paul explains what it means to live in the Spirit and how that transcends living in the flesh. Those who live in the flesh will be spiritually dead, but those who live in the Spirit will live because Jesus lives in them. By receiving the Spirit, those who put their faith in Jesus have been adopted into sonship and can cry out to the Lord and be heard. As God’s children, we are heirs with Jesus, suffering with Him, that we may also be glorified together with Christ.

There is always a judicial tension in sections like these in scripture. One implication is that our spirit alone cannot sustain our relationship with Him. We need the Spirit to empower us as we call “Abba, Father”. Those who have seen the Son have seen the Father, and the Father knows them. Even as we call out to God, we must understand that the Spirit intercedes for us and faith in Christ puts us in right standing with God.

Prayer -

Dear Heavenly Father,

We bow before You, knowing that as we pray, Your Spirit bears witness with ours that we are Your children. We cannot think of anything more mind-blowing than that. You love the whole world, and in providing Jesus, You sent Your Spirit to work among the church all over the world and in us. We give You praise, glory, and ask to be forgiven when we have fallen short. Help us live for Your glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
