Our Mission:To be disciple -makers as Jesus commanded---"Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” ---Matthew 28:18

BLESSED BY BELIEVING WITHOUT SEEING!

Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. ---John 20:24-31

Ten other disciples of Jesus, plus the women’s testimony, told Thomas that they had seen the Lord, that He was alive. Thomas’ response to them was--- “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” How many people need to bear witness to a person before they believe? Thomas would not even believe these close associates of his. They were not strangers to him. Did he think they were all lying to him?

A week later Jesus appeared to the disciples again and Thomas was with them. When he saw Jesus, he acknowledged Jesus as “My Lord and my God!” Jesus told Thomas that “Because you have seen me, you have believed.” But then Jesus said this--- “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Those blessed would include every person who has believed since then without having to see Jesus. Have you believed? Then you are blessed.

How did you come to know Jesus? “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” You believed by reading the written Word or “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17) and so believe by hearing His Word. So, you believed by reading or hearing His Word or a combination of both of them. By believing what you read or heard or both, you were believed and are blessed. The end result is that you have eternal life through His Name!

If you have not believed yet, why? How many people who follow Jesus and have told you about Him will it take for you to believe? Or will you fall into the same fate as the rich man’s brothers who it was said of--- “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead” (Luke 16:31). Or, will you be blessed because you have believed His Word without having to see Him physically? Oh, that you would believe if you have not already. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD6khv6pGkw&t=14s

JESUS FINISHED THE WORK!

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. ---John 19:30

When Jesus said, “It is finished” ---“everything has been accomplished which by the appointment of the Father as revealed in the Scriptures I must do and bear.”

“No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them—the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough—so that they should live on forever and not see decay… But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.” ---Psalm 49:7-9, 15

The work of Jesus was completed on the cross and “through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 1:4). Jesus proved He was the Son of God through the resurrection. What no man could do, the Son of God did---

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.” ---I Peter 1:18-21

It took the Son of God to pay for the sin debt of mankind and Jesus “is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (I John 2:2). Jesus already did the work to redeem mankind and now “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).

Electricity in your wall does you no good unless you plug into it. You can know it is there in the wall. You can be close to it, but unless you plug into it you will not know its power. It is the same with Jesus. You can know about Him. You can be hearing about Him. You can be close to those who know Him. But unless you call on His Name in sincerity, His finished work on the cross will be of no benefit to you. Need to call on His Name? MY REFUGE--- TRUSTING HIS WORD

Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.” One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow. ---John 18:25-27

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.” ---John 19:7

“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” ---John 19:10-11

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. ---Psalm 119:114

Just as Jesus said to Pilate--- “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above,” so it is with us. Nobody has the power to do anything to us unless our Lord God Almighty allows it according to His purposes. All that was being done to Jesus was in accordance with God’s plan to carry out His will and this was for the benefit of mankind! It surely did not look like that at the time. And so it is with us. Difficult, as well as the good, we may not understand in the present, but our Lord God Almighty is working it out according to His plan and our good (Romans 8:28).

Even Peter’s denial was going to be worked out for the good by Jesus (Jn 21:15-19). Do we ever deny Jesus before people? Again, we need not fear people because they cannot do anything to us unless Jesus allows it. When we fail, as Peter did, our Lord desires to restore us, as He did Peter, but it also gives us an opportunity to learn things about ourselves and then not to repeat the same mistakes. Jesus is the Son of God. The Jews wanted to execute Him for this and we are safe in His hands. Again, Jesus said to Pilate, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.” And so it is with us as well.

Truly, Jesus is “my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.” I stake my eternal destiny on Jesus and His Word. What or who are you trusting your eternal destiny with? May it be God’s Son, Jesus, who said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6) and as Luke wrote in Acts 4:12--- “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Thank You, Dear Father, for Your patience with me and for the salvation You have given me in Jesus, Your Son. Now, by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son, Jesus, if there are any reading who have not called on His Name, may they do so now. BETRAYAL

In all Israel there was not a man so highly praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. From the top of his head to the sole of his foot there was no blemish in him. ---II Samuel 14:25

And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.” ---II Samuel 15:4

Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’” ---II Samuel 15:10

A messenger came and told David, “The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom. Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword.” ---II Samuel 15:13-14

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. ---John 18:2-3

“The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (I Samuel 16:7). The two betrayers in the above passages looked good on the outside, “but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence” (Matthew 23:25). The same satanic spirit motivated Absalom, Judas, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees. As a matter of fact, all people who do not have a relationship with our Lord are in “the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants” (II Timothy 2:26).

Beware of those betrayers around us. “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (I Peter 5:8). And the devil works through people he has trapped and are holding them captive “him to do whatever he wants.” Anyone who does not know Jesus is in danger of being a betrayer. As a matter of fact, to be under the devil’s will is betrayal. Absalom betrayed David so he could become king, Judas betrayed Jesus so he could get money, the teachers of the law and Pharisees betrayed Jesus so they could keep their power positions. Every person who has not called on Jesus is betraying him so they can be the “god of their own lives, the captain of their own ship, the determiner of their own destiny.” That is betrayal and the betrayers seek to get others on their side to bolster their false beliefs.

Jesus said, ““Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me (Matthew 12:30). So, the question is--- “A you with Jesus or opposing Him? Are you working with Him or working against Him? Your answer will determine your eternal destiny--- heaven or hell. What will you choose?

THE DESTRUCTIVENESS OF LUST

In the course of time, Amnon son of David fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of Absalom son of David. Amnon became so obsessed with his sister Tamar that he made himself ill. She was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her. II Samuel 13:1-2

Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food here into my bedroom so I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the bread she had prepared and brought it to her brother Amnon in his bedroom. But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, “Come to bed with me, my sister.” “No, my brother!” she said to him. “Don’t force me! Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don’t do this wicked thing. What about me? Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And what about you? You would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not keep me from being married to you.” But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he r***d her. Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Get up and get out!” ---II Samuel 13:10-16

Absalom ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I given you this order? Be strong and brave.” So Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered. Then all the king’s sons got up, mounted their mules and fled. ---II Samuel 13:28-29

This has been Absalom’s express intention ever since the day Amnon r***d his sister Tamar. ---II Samuel 13:32

Love looks out for the best interests of the other person. Lust looks out only for the interest of self. Love is powerful. Lust is also powerful. When love is in control, wonderful things happen. When lust is in control, terrible things happen. Terrible things happened in our passage today because of lust.

It is said that “Amnon son of David fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of Absalom son of David. Amnon became so obsessed with his sister Tamar that he made himself ill. She was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her.” And there you have it--- lust obsess. That is not love. Amnon was so obsessed that his advisor said, “Why do you, the king’s son, look so haggard morning after morning? Won’t you tell me?” When Amnon told his advisor that ““I’m in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister,” they devised a wicked plan. Amnon would fake being sick and have Tamar come to prepare him something to eat. He would then have everyone leave and have her come into his bedroom to feed him. His lust controlled him and Amnon r***d Tamar, even though she had pleaded with him not to. The end result? --- Amnon “hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Get up and get out!”

When Tamar’s brother, Absalom, heard about this, he devised a plan to kill Amnon. Now the lustful thoughts of Absalom would bring him to the point of murder--- “Absalom ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I given you this order? Be strong and brave.” So, Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered.”

Lust is so destructive and we see these same things in our culture and in our world. Lust, looking out for self interest alone, causes people to r**e, murder and a host of other wicked activities. Do not let lust control you because it will cause you to do things that are very destructive to self and to others.

Dear Father, please help me not to be controlled by lust, but by love. May this be so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus. Yes, so may it be!

A CHILD’S DEATH

He answered, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.’ But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.” ---II Samuel 12:22-23

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” ---John 16:33

Jesus made it very clear that “In this world you will have trouble.” These troubles (trials and sorrows) take many forms. One of them is when a child dies. David took much comfort in the fact that he would “go to him, but he will not return to me.” David believed that he would see the child again after death. This should bring great comfort to those who have lost a child.

And yet, this brings up questions to my mind.

1. Do all children world-wide go to heaven when they die?
2. Is there an age of “accountability” the child gets to and will no longer go to heaven if they die unless they profess faith in Jesus?
3. Is it that because God knows which child would profess faith if they lived long enough and that those children would go to heaven?

Very little is said about this in God’s Word. Jesus did say “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” This was said after “people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them” (Matthew 19:13-14). These are “little children” that were brought to Jesus--- “young children.”

I do know that “little children” at our daycare are quick to listen and respond to stories from God’s Word. Children would readily listen to and interact with these stories. Unfortunately, it is the unbelieving adults that negatively impact children. Just look at our educational system and that is easy to see. Again, Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them.” Could it be that adults “hinder” children from coming to Jesus? Surely this is the case in families and in our broader culture.

Jesus also said, “Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it” (Luke 18:17). Apparently, children are more readily apt to “receive the kingdom of God” that adults are. Adults are told to be like little children in doing so.

Our Lord has given us the responsibility to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:5-9). Yes, we are to love our Lord God and share Him with out children. We see this example of Timothy in II Timothy 3:15 “how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” And apparently it was Timothy’s mother and grandmother that had an impact in his life. Paul said of Timothy--- “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (II Timothy 1:5).

We can take comfort that children that die are safe in the arms of Jesus. But we also need to take the responsibility to teach children about Jesus. May we do so, Dear Father, by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus. Yes, for Your honor and glory!

THE UTTER DESTRUCTIVENESS OF SINFUL ACTIONS

One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. ---II Samuel 11:2-4

How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!... At David’s invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master’s servants; he did not go home. In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.” ---II Samuel 11:11, 13-15

When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord. ---II Samuel 11:26-27

Temptation… if we continue being tempted then we will wind up doing something that will be regretted later and yet the destruction in another’s life could already be great. This is what happen to David---

• David couldn’t sleep
• He went for a walk on the roof of the palace
• From the roof he saw a woman bathing
• He saw that the woman was beautiful
• He sent someone to find out about her
• She was one of David’s faithful fighting men’s wives
• He sent for her
• She came to him
• He slept with her
• He tried covering his sexual sin
• He had someone killed to cover his sexual sin
• He believed He has covered up his sexual sin
• But God knew all about it
• God was displeased

To try to cover his sin, and Bathsheba was pregnant, he had Uriah, her husband, come back from the front lines of battle. Twice David encouraged Uriah to go home to his wife, but twice he refused and would not do it, but stayed among the soldiers. David, seeing his plan to have Uriah go down to his wife failed, devised another plan. “In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.” And that is exactly what happened. “When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.”

A glance, continued look, temptation, giving into the temptation, sinning, seeking to cover the sin, destruction of lives… and thinking nobody knows… “But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.” The Lord knew what David did. He knew everything about David and He knows everything about us. Dear Father, may I not seek to “hide” or cover-up my sin, but immediately confess it to you. Please keep me from temptation and deliver me from the evil one. May this be so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus.

LOVING OBEDIENCE TO OUR SOVEREIGN LORD

“How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.” ---II Samuel 7:22

“If you love me, keep my commands.” ---John 14:15

“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” ---John 14:21

“Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching.” ---John 14:24

“Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end.” ---Psalm 119:33

“I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.” ---Psalm 119:45

There are those who have not called on the Lord to save them (Romans 10:13) because they “like their freedom.” But what they do not understand is that they need to “come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, who has taken them captive to his will” (II Timothy 2:26). They think they are living in “freedom” and yet they are actually imprisoned by the devil--- imprisoned to do the devil’s will and the greatest desire of the devil is to keep people to experience the freedom that only exists in Jesus. Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). True freedom comes with loving obedience to what God’s Word says.

The greatest command, Jesus said, is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). To love Him is to obey Him and walk in the freedom He gives. Oh yes, “How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.” So now, Dear Father, may I lovingly obey Your desires by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Dear Son Jesus. I am so grateful that You love me and out of that gratitude, may I do Your will!
