Sisters of the Holy Cross

Sisters of the Holy Cross Committed to social and environmental justice, following Jesus' call to love and serve our neighbor.

We, Sisters of the Holy Cross, participants in God’s mission, rejoice in being an international and intercultural congregation, which is both gift and challenge for us, for the Church and for the world. Immersed in a world of violence that is destroying human dignity and creation, it is our responsibility to work to implement a culture of peace and nonviolence. As women of compassion and hope, wit

h deep trust in Divine Providence and with zeal for the Gospel, we choose to deepen our commitment to the people we serve and continue to be a prophetic sign of God’s love to the Church and the world. Our Core Values guide our lives and our relationships in ministry and in community:

-- Compassion compels us to stand with and embrace others in their suffering, that together we may experience God’s liberating and healing presence.

-- Faith impels us to trust God ever more radically and to risk responding as disciples of Jesus.

-- Prayer, personal and communal, grounds us in God’s unconditional love, calls us to integrity in discernment, and animates us in our work of building a society of justice and love.

-- Community commits us to seek ways to journey together which energize and sustain us to live our mission in solidarity with one another.

Among the treasured artifacts of the Sisters of the Holy Cross is the ingenious “fluting machine” invented by Sister M. Cyril (Bux), CSC (1860–1942). ✨

When the growing community faced the possibility of changing its distinctive “fluted cap,” Sister Cyril found a solution. With little training but plenty of creativity, determination and faith, she designed a “fluting machine” that mechanized the process. After trial, error and perseverance, her invention was completed in 1920—and served the Congregation for decades.

In town for Reunion Weekend? Stop by the Heritage and Research Center at Saint Mary’s during its open house June 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to see this remarkable artifact in person.

Forty years ago, Sister Maura Brannick, CSC, saw a need that could not be ignored.

In a small carriage house in South Bend, with deep faith and an unwavering belief in the dignity of every person, she began a ministry rooted in one simple conviction: everyone deserves access to compassionate health care.

What started as a humble effort to care for uninsured neighbors out of a garage grew into something far greater. Today, the Sister Maura Brannick Health Center stands as a place of healing, hope and welcome for thousands in our community.

Sister Maura never sought recognition. She simply lived the mission of the Sisters of the Holy Cross each day—meeting people with compassion, listening without judgment and serving with love.

As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sister Maura Brannick Health Center, we give thanks for Sister Maura’s extraordinary vision and for every physician, nurse, volunteer and donor who continues this ministry of care. May her light and legacy continue to guide this mission for generations to come.

Right now, many children in India are waiting for the chance to attend school—but without housing, simply can’t.

A new dormitory at Our Lady of Holy Cross School will triple capacity and open doors for dozens more students.

Your support can make that possible.
