Notre Dame Knights of Columbus

Notre Dame Knights of Columbus A brotherhood of faith and service for the aspiring Catholic gentleman Saint John Paul II called us “the Strong Right Arm of the Church.”

Fr.

Ted Hesburgh called us “the best of the best.”

We are the Knights of Columbus. We built the steeple at the National Shrine. We bring the Pope’s Christmas and Easter broadcasts to the world. We pledged $1.4 million to transport American and Canadian athletes to the Special Olympics World Games. We inspire and challenge each other to be the best men that we can be, working together for the poor and

vulnerable in our midst. Founded in 1910 by a group of friends that included a 21-year-old future cardinal named John F. O’Hara, Notre Dame Council #1477 is the largest and oldest college council in a worldwide brotherhood of aspiring Catholic gentlemen growing side-by-side in faith and service.

As we remember the tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001, we are reminded of our nation was brought together and looked to God as our only hope. Let us pray for the eternal rest of victims of the 9/11 attacks and plead Our Lady, Queen of Peace, for an end to the increasing political violence facing our country.

“Peace on Earth—which man throughout the ages has so longed for and sought after—can never be established, never guaranteed, except by the diligent observance of the divinely established order.” - Pope John XXIII

On February 6, 1882, Father Michael Joseph McGivney founded the first Knights of Columbus council in the basement of Saint Mary’s Parish in New Haven, Connecticut. McGivney sought to establish a fraternal organization that would ensure the financial security of its members, and provide a fraternal community to men who were adjusting to life in the New World. Amidst rising anti-Catholic sentiment in the United States, many immigrants found it difficult to reconcile loyalty to a country founded on Enlightenment principles and seemingly so hostile to the holy faith. McGivney chose Columbus as the patron of this new order to express its loyalty both to the United States and the Church. Father McGivney died in 1890, only eight years after the founding of first council, but by then the order had expanded to include 57 councils. Since his death, the Knights councils have been chartered all over the country, and the order continues to represent the interests of the Church in American society and fight for social justice, particularly for the unborn. In recognition of his immense contribution to the Church in America, a cause for canonization was opened for Fr. McGivney in 1996. After an in utero miracle attributed to him was authorized, Pope Francis approved the beatification Fr. McGivney. He was beatified on October 31, 2020 in Hartford. Blessed Michael McGivney, pray for us!

“In America as enshrined in your nation’s founding documents, was grounded in a worldview shaped not only by faith but a commitment to certain ethical principles deriving from nature and nature’s God.”
Pope Benedict XVI

As we celebrate the founding of our nation, Council No. 1477 wishes a happy Independence Day to the entire Notre Dame community. Since the earliest days of the order, the Knights of Columbus have been the “right arm of the Church” in American society, promoting the same God-given rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness upon which our country was founded.
