Little Merrit's Tomb A Tomb With a Window Marking the Final Resting Place of Merrit Beardsley Upon His Death in 1865

Merrit Beardsley, the son of William and Sarah, died December 15, 1865, at the young age of eight. It is said that, as a promise to keep the boy out of the dark, a window in a grave was made by his father William, a stone mason, and mother Sarah. The Beardsley Cemetery is maintained by Stefan Foster with permission from the Town of Oxford. It is located approx. 2.5 miles from the Village of Oxford

center on Joe Hoben Road. Foster, who wrote a book in 2013 and led a successful fundraiser, paid for a historic roadside marker to be cast and installed. The cemetery is located near Ingraham Hollow and the Town of McDonough. Foster has repaired several formerly broken stones in the cemetery. Stay tuned for his forthcoming field guide with photographs and additional history, and thank you for preserving the story with emotion.
