Choosing one singular scripture for International Day of Families was just too difficult. Families come in all shapes and sizes. Family can also mean a lot of different things. By definition, a family is a group of people connected by blood, marriage, adoption, or strong emotional bonds, typically living together, interacting, and supporting one another. In honor of those we call family, here are several scriptures to consider:
"How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity!" —Psalm 133:1
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." —Ephesians 4:32
"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." —Joshua 24:15
"The Lord bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace."" —Numbers 6:24-26
"By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established." —Proverbs 24:3

Today's scripture of the day comes from Psalm 55:22: "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken."
With this verse we are reminded that the righteous will not be permanently shaken or moved by hardships when they entrust their cares to God. Instead of dwelling on the burdens we carry, we should reflect on them and turn our worries to God. We should rely on His strength rather than our own, which is especially important to do during times of uncertainty.

Today's scripture of the day comes from Ephesians 4:32: "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Throughout the day, try to focus on forgiving others and mirroring the grace shown to us through Christ. While you pray, ask for the Holy Spirit to strengthen your ability to be compassionate, towards yourself and towards other.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.”
Proverbs 31:25-26

On this Mother’s Day, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to every mother for the many expressions of love, presence, and support that enrich our lives, our churches, and our communities.

We honor mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, sisters, aunties and all who offer motherly wisdom, strength, and compassion in the lives of others. We celebrate the many ways love is shared, and lives are touched each day, reflecting the grace of God and sustaining hope across generations.

We are also mindful that this day carries varied emotions. We hold in prayer those who grieve, those who have lost mothers and children, those who long to be mothers, those with complicated or painful relationships, and those whose journeys of motherhood are marked by complexity. May God’s abiding presence bring comfort, peace, and healing. May today be all about you.

On behalf of American Baptist Churches USA, we pray that you will be renewed with joy and strengthened in spirit, knowing that your presence is a blessing in the world.

Grace, peace and abundant blessings to you this Mother’s Day.

Rev. Dr. Gina C. Jacobs-Strain
General Secretary
