"For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes" (GAL 3:26-27). When a person joins military service, they sign a document in a recruiter's office and are now part of that branch of service. But a more important ceremony happens later after completing basic training. They put on the uniform, raise their right hand and promise to defend their country with their lives if necessary. They are a member of the service when they sign. But putting on the uniform and making that commitment to live or die for their country makes them live in that reality. The person who puts his or her faith in Jesus for forgiveness and new life is a Christian, a "child of God." The person who chooses to obey Christ's command to "be baptized" stands before God and witnesses to promise to serve Christ, love Christ, and live for Christ. Jesus Christ himself is our uniform. We are to look like, act like, love like and forgive like our Lord. "Can a person be a Christian and not be baptized?" Yes, but they are like the person who signed the document in the recruiter's office but never took that public oath. Can a person be a Christian without committing to imitate and obey Jesus Christ? Baptism is more than a religious ritual. It is a public statement that I am choosing to love, obey, and live for Jesus Christ. That makes a huge difference in my relationship with Christ.
