🔸 Saturday of Souls 🍚🕯️🔸
Today, the Saturday before Pentecost, is the Saturday of Souls. Together with the Saturday preceding Meatfare Sunday, this is one of the two principal days in the Orthodox liturgical year dedicated to the commemoration of all the faithful departed. Saturday has traditionally been the day of prayer for the dead, as Christ lay in the tomb on Great and Holy Saturday before His Resurrection.
On the Saturday before Pentecost, we commemorate all departed pious Orthodox Christians, affirming that the saving grace bestowed upon the Church through the coming of the Holy Spirit extends also to those who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Throughout history, countless people have died in foreign lands, at sea, in the wilderness, through famine, war, poverty, disease, exposure to the elements, and many other circumstances. Many were deprived of the customary psalter readings, funeral rites, and memorial services.
Therefore, the Holy Fathers established a general commemoration of all the departed, so that those who did not receive the customary obsequies might still be remembered. The Church also prays especially for the poor and for those who have no one to pray for them or request memorial services on their behalf. The kollyva prepared for memorial services is rich in symbolism. The wheat represents the earth from which man was formed and the hope of the resurrection, recalling Christ’s words:
“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain” (John 12:24). The pomegranate seeds and sugar symbolize the sweetness of Paradise and eternal life. The raisins represent the fruit of Christ “the True Vine” (John 15:1), and the almonds remind us of the bones resting in the tomb awaiting the resurrection. The first icon recalls the verse:
“The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment touch them” (Wisdom 3:1). The souls rest in God’s right hand, a place of divine honor and protection: “I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10); “He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God” (Mark 16:19).
