At Norwalk United Methodist Church, we believe deeply in the power of the United Methodist connectional system. When churches work together, share leadership, and support one another, we are able to serve our communities in ways that no single congregation could accomplish alone.
That is why we are excited to share about a new collaborative initiative within the Iowa Annual Conference called The Urban Collective: Better Together.
The Urban Collective brings together several United Methodist congregations across Des Moines in a new and innovative partnership designed to strengthen ministry, share leadership, and expand the church’s presence in the communities they serve.
What makes this effort especially unique is its team-based model of ministry. Pastors will continue to have primary responsibility for their individual congregations, while also being appointed to the Urban Collective as a whole. Through this model, pastors will collaborate across congregations, share their gifts and leadership, and support one another as they work together to strengthen ministry throughout the city.
This new model will begin as a three-year pilot initiative within the Iowa Annual Conference as these congregations learn, grow, and explore new ways of serving their neighborhoods together.
The initial congregations participating in the Urban Collective include:
• Southside Church & Community Center
• Easton Place United Methodist Church
• Sheridan Park United Methodist Church
• Fort Des Moines United Methodist Church
• Wesley La Resurrección United Methodist Church
Together, these churches represent the beautiful diversity of Des Moines, including ministries that are multicultural and multilingual. The Urban Collective is an opportunity to celebrate that diversity while strengthening ministry across communities and neighborhoods.
While Norwalk UMC is not one of the congregations directly included in the Urban Collective appointments, we remain meaningfully connected to this work. Effective July 1st, Pastor Mike will hold two appointments: one serving Norwalk, and the other leading the Urban Collective, which South Side is a part of.
Norwalk United Methodist Church played a vital role in helping launch Southside Church & Community Center, and we continue to celebrate and support the ministry happening there. Because of that relationship, our congregation remains closely connected to the broader vision of strengthening urban ministry through this partnership.
We are grateful to see Southside and these partner congregations stepping forward with creativity, collaboration, and faith as they explore new ways to share leadership, expand ministry, and serve the diverse communities of Des Moines.
We look forward with hope and excitement to seeing how God continues to work through these churches in the years ahead.
