⛪👪 “Church family” language can feel comforting, but it can also blur lines that deserve honesty. Churches are not families. They are relational communities, and communities function best when people are free to question, choose, come and go without pressure.

Calling a church a family can create expectations that aren’t safe or realistic. Healthy communities require consent, boundaries and mutual respect.

For me, unlearning this was a slow process. I had to recognize how “family” language was used to justify access, create a false sense of connection, silence concerns and demand loyalty, things I never actually agreed to. Naming that truth broke the invisible hold family language had on my mind and emotions - it helped me see what a healthy connection should look and feel like.

And it’s worth saying for clarity's sake: being God’s children is a spiritual identity, not a membership to a church. A church is an organization - often a nonprofit with leadership structures, budgets and bylaws. That’s not the same thing as a family system, even when the language makes it feel that way.

If you were taught to confuse belonging with obligation, or if you felt pressured to stay silent or stay loyal in the name of “family,” that wasn’t love...or Jesus. That was control. You get to name that now. And you get to choose what healthy connection looks like moving forward.

Be well. Be free. 💙
