Today Pastor Steve and a handful of members from NELC and Washington went to Fargo to help Pastor Jessica and The Neighborhood Church with their pop up food pantry.

Many people received bags of food and it was so nice to support the ministry of Pastor Jessica and her people. As Pastor Jessica said, this is how we come together as a community to address food insecurity and serve our neighbors.

Since we didn’t live stream a regular Sunday service yesterday, here is an excerpt from Pastor Steve’s message on the feeding of the 5000 from the 9am service.

We call this story the feeding of the 5000, but if you read the actual words of the story, it’s a lot more than that. It says 5000 men, besides women and children. They have a crowd that is likely twice as big as we initially think.

I don’t blame the disciples for being worried. They have 5 loaves and 2 fish. Jesus has just told them to feed the crowd. What are they supposed to do? Well, Jesus takes care of that.
With his blessing he creates a situation where all are fed and there is some left over.

Now don’t think too hard about how exactly they distributed that much food to a crowd that big. I have no clue how they would have done that either. How this happened is not the point as I often remind when we discuss Bible stories. It’s the lesson that we need to pay attention to.

Jesus asks his followers to believe. He asks them to give him their faith that things will be okay. He teaches them a lesson about being generous with our resources. He teaches them that sometimes when we don’t think we have enough, that God will give us what we need.

This whole story is kind of an illustration of what Jesus has gone through after he learned John the Baptist had died. He is sad, he is tired, he wants to be alone, but even when he doesn’t think he can give anymore to the people, he finds the strength to continue the work.

He won’t send the people away because they need him even if he isn’t at one hundred percent. He teaches his students that sometimes when we might be running on empty, we still show up for people in need.

Now keep in mind, this is not a lesson that says you should give and give until you burn out. The lesson is that sometimes we might have more left in the tank than we thought we did, and maybe even some to spare.

God’s love is infinite and there aren’t limits on it. We are human and we have our limits. Give what you can, when you can, let God handle the rest.

Don’t forget! Tomorrow is VBS Sunday at NELC!
Join us at 11am for a completely different kind of worship service filled with songs, stories and activities.

It’s your chance to share the VBS experience together with the kids and be a part of everything they did this past week.

We will collect a noisy offering for Christus Rex Lutheran Campus Ministry as well as our regular offering. Get ready for opportunities to interact in many different ways with the service.

Bring the whole family as we explore the nature of God together.
