The Gathering

The Gathering The Gathering is an invitation to grow in awareness of God and of yourself in His presence with others who share the same desire.

The Gathering is an invitation to community within the community. Our purpose is to share, learn and practice ways that can help our formation and integration. It is meant to be a sacred but approachable space that provides language and practices which are not widely embraced in our modern context but are essential for knowing God and knowing ourselves. The Gathering is an expressly Christian comm

unity, which has an open chair for all regardless of their spot on the continuum to greater faith and wholeness. Our gatherings consist of a simply constructed space and format combining both historic and present-day elements with a focus on the contemplative (aka "quiet"). The Gathering meets every other Tuesday at 7:00pm for about an hour in downtown Northville at 113 W. Main, Northville Square Mall on the main level. Our schedule can be found on our website at www.thegatheringnorthville.com. We apologize that we are not able to provide childcare.

As we close this season of The Gathering, we want to take a moment to say thank you to so many who have supported us through prayer, the sharing of wisdom, giving of time and resources and presence at our gatherings. The impact of each of your contributions was felt and appreciated. We don't know how God may lead for the future but in this moment we are thanking Him for His presence and the work He did through the space that was created. So glad we serve a faithful, abundant God. Thank you to Him and to all of our community...stay in the stream :)

This past week at The Gathering, we responded to the invitation to wholeness. We examined the prevailing tendency in our culture of compartmentalization: putting different areas of our life into different compartments and becoming different people within each one of those spaces. The result is a fragmented, disjointed existence that struggles to find cohesiveness and purpose. Scripture teaches the idea of wholeness through the concept of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:16-21). That God is reconciling all of Creation back to Himself and that the work of reconciliation doesn't begin "out there" among races, cultures, or communities...but rather it begins within. We must receive reconciliation with God through the grace of Christ and then journey into greater and greater oneness, letting Him invade every area of our lives, integrating and bringing peace. When we are at peace with God and ourselves, then we can be instruments of that peace to our world. The work of formation is the most crucial work we can do to further wholeness, peace and the love of God to our world. We can only give away what we have.

We shared the practice of the Passing of the Peace and why this simple, physical act can help us to both to recognize if we are in a space of peace with God and also enable us to be a conduit for that peace to those we encounter. Check out this blog for a reflection on this important practice: https://milewis.wordpress.com/2012/01/17/greeting-peace-be-with-you/

"In affliction, then, we do not know what is right to pray for. Because affliction is difficult, troublesome and against the grain for us, weak as we are, we do what every human would do. We pray that it may be taken away from us. However, if He does not take it away, we must not imagine that He has forgotten us. In this way, power shines forth more perfectly in weakness." Augustine, 354-430AD

What if the measure of our accomplishments today was not how much we got done, but how much we did with love? Lord, help us to bring Your love and unending grace into every situation this day.

This past Tuesday at The Gathering we shared an invitation to rest.

We talked about the idea of rest as trust. When we can't stop "doing" to engage in rhythms of rest, we say through our actions that we don't trust God's ways. When we rest from doing to "be" with God, with others, with ourselves, we acknowledge that we are limited and our ultimate trust is not in ourselves but in God. We practiced contemplative prayer, which is a form of prayer that allows for being with God and resting from petition, activity and talking to grow in communion with God through silence and centering. We challenged one another to add a time of contemplative prayer of at least 2 minutes to our time with the Lord on a daily basis.

It was a rich time of being and practicing together and fellowship at the table of the Lord's Supper...as well as some cookies and lemonade :) Thanks to all who joined and welcome to all who would like to in the future!

As the weight of a new week rushes upon us, keep us alert to Your presence Lord and the purpose of all our activity.

The question at our first Gathering last night was:
"Will you remain in the river?"

We talked about spiritual formation using the illustration of being a river rock which is changed by the force of the river flowing over and around it...smoothing out its roughness and changing its shape. Just like the job of the rock is to remain in the river, our work in formation is to place ourselves in the flow of God's transforming work and then remain. Not easy. It means we must give up our control, our hurriedness, our agenda and be willing let Him shape us when and how and into the shape He desires. Together we learned about the practice of silence as a way of saying to God, "You are God and I am not and this space is for You to speak and for me to learn to hear You."

Thank you for for friends old and new who joined in community for our first Gathering and for the helping hands who made it possible. We are grateful :) Join us again in two weeks for Invitation to Rest.

We are tired, Lord,
weary of the long night without rest.
We grow complaining and bitter.
We grieve for ourselves as we grow hardened to the pain of others.
Another death leaves us unmoved.
A widow's tears fall unnoticed.
Our children know only the bitterness already possessing their parents.
Our violent words explode into violent acts, bringing destruction without thought or reason.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Lead us to repentance, that we may forgive and be forgiven.
Amen.

-a prayer from the Worship Sourcebook as we grieve the loss of life created in God's image in Orlando

Beginning to Begin

Can we recognize that now and then there comes
an inner sense, a fleeting thought, a little yearning
to live our lives a little differently?

We don't know what this means or what it requires.
We shake these notions off like a dog shakes off water
and go about our business.

But the longing continues.

Who has time we ask? What is it anyway?
Recognize to do what? Stop?
Do nothing? Be quiet?
What for?

Our practical selves only know how to perfect,
produce and perform.
This, at least, we can see as useful. This has results.
We want to believe in this way of perceiving.

But the longing doesn't let us alone. It won't go away.
We become even busier perhaps
to "take care of it."
We numb ourselves with distractions - things to do,
consume and maintain -
things to collect, experience, and entertain.
We can always think of more miles to run.

Could we sense that this longing is not lack
or something worse
-some kind of fundamental flaw in us?
Could we receive it as an invitation instead,
a calling, a small voice inviting us home,
back to our truer self?

This shift in thought can move mountains.
It can let us begin to begin.

We're excited to share that we are beginning a ministry in Northville starting this month called The Gathering!

We are beginning this ministry out of a desire to create space that encourages practices and rhythms that grow our awareness of God and of ourselves in His presence. Our gatherings will be simple in format and provide space to learn, share and practice spiritual formation in community.

We are meeting in the Northville Square Mall downtown every other Tuesday night at 7:00pm starting June 14th. There is plenty of parking behind the mall. Please join us to experience a gathering and please share this with anyone who you think might be interested in this community. Thank you!
