For this devotional we will be looking at two different books in our Bible.
First, Matthew 14:22-31
Second, John 21:3-7
Something shifted in Peter from his demeanor.
In Matthew chapter 14 we see a Peter that is fearful to leave the boat and get into the water, even though, Jesus reassured him.
Later, in John chapter 21 we see a Peter that has no problem getting into the water. He doesn’t just get into the water but the text states that, when he heard John say that it was the Lord that, “he threw himself into the water.”
As I was studying these two chapters, I asked the Holy Spirit to give me a word and revelation. And the word the Holy Spirit gave me was TRUST.
You see, for me personally, TRUST is a foundation for any relationship I am in, whether it’s a friendship, business or romantic.
My motto is, no trust - no relationship.
But let’s go back to Peter.
So what had changed? The reason why Peter threw himself in to the water so unapologetic was because he now trusted Jesus.
That trust was developed between them during Jesus’ ministry time. And although, there are several theories about the length of Jesus’ ministry and the time that he spent with His disciples, that time was ENOUGH for Peter to witness Jesus’ character.
1- You can trust God.
You can trust God because of His Character.
The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “ The LORD, the LORD a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, Exodus 34:6
You can trust Him because His character never changes.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
2- You don’t have to understand to trust God.
Proverbs 3:5 tells us the following, Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.
Many things in our walk with the Lord will not make sense to us. I have to confess that I struggle with trusting God with the smaller things but are faster to release the bigger things. For example: I completely trust Him with my salvation, however, at times I struggle with trusting that He is also involved in the smaller details of my life such as a stressful work meeting.
3- What are my other options besides trust?
The other options are worry, fear, stress.
Honestly it takes less work to trust and release than to try to control and figure things out.
The pharmaceutical companies are booming in the U.S. as more and more people are diagnosed with illnesses like anxiety, depression.
The truth is that it is difficult to place our trust in anyone we don’t have a relationship with; it’s difficult to place our trust on someone we don’t know. But the truth is that God is NOT playing a hiding game. His Word tells us,
“when you search for me with all your heart you will find me.”
My prayer for you today is that you get to know the One that not only knows everything about you but is also, longing to share His heart with you. Today, may be like that fearless Peter that threw himself into the water in complete and full surrender of Jesus.
You are loved. 🙏🏻
