But when the Israelites cried out to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them.

Judges 3:9
Half-measures rarely end well.

The book of Judges showcases small and subtle compromises sn*******ng into gigantic failures.

Despite God's clear commands, the tribes of Israel fail to fully drive out the inhabitants of the land. This partial obedience results in compromises that ultimately lead to their downfall. The Israelites begin to adopt the practices of the people around them, worshipping their gods and neglecting the commands of the Lord.

This episode of Bible in a Year serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of partial obedience to God's commands. The Israelites' failure to fully commit to God's instructions leads to spiritual compromise and moral decay.

Instead of enjoying the fullness of God's blessings, they face cycles of oppression, repentance, and deliverance as God raises up judges to lead them out of their self-inflicted troubles.

These Judges start off righteous, rising above the flaccid faith of Isreal to save them. But eventually, the Judges who rise to save Israel are just as morally compromised and wicked as them.

Judges begins with hope but soon spirals out of control…

He said, 'Listen to my words: When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams. But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house.'

Numbers 12:6-7

“If I were in charge, everything would be better.” This sentiment is shared by many people who haven’t truly experienced the burden of responsibility and leadership. In this episode of Bible in a Year, Aaron and Miriam fall into the trap of thinking they could do Moses’ job better.

Jealousy corrodes relationships. And sturdy relationships are the backbone of any movement.

This episode of sibling rivalry echoes the recurring theme of familial conflict brought by jealousy found throughout the Bible. We saw it with Cain and Abel. We saw it with Joseph and his brothers. Now, we see it with Aaron and Miriam when they plan a coup against Moses.

The story is not merely about the rivalry but also God's response to such discord. God's immediate defense of Moses underscores the importance of respecting His chosen leaders. Miriam is struck with leprosy, but God heals her. This shows us the intensity of God’s judgment but the immediacy of His mercy if we repent.

Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.

Exodus 17:6

We all experience dry seasons. Seasons of doubt, complacency, and complaining.

This episode of Bible in a Year is inspired by Exodus 17, when the Israelites face a dire situation – thirst in the desert. This challenge symbolizes the spiritual thirst we all encounter in life's dry seasons.

The people grumble against Moses, questioning God's presence among them. In response, God instructs Moses to strike a rock, from which water miraculously flows. This story is not just about physical thirst but also about the spiritual longing we all experience.

The water from the rock is a powerful metaphor for God's provision in our most desperate times. It teaches us that even when we doubt and complain, God remains patient and generous, always ready to meet our needs.

Yet the rock also symolozes something deeper. It’s an image of Jesus, who was struck for our salvation.

The Israelites' grumbling represents our own doubts and fears. Like them, we often question God's presence and care in our difficulties. Yet, this story reassures us that God's provision is not limited by our doubts. He can bring forth living water even from the hardest, most unlikely places in our lives.

The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

Exodus 12:13

Let me ask you a question: Who is the hero of your story?

Who do you turn to when the going gets tough, and circumstances seem too overwhelming to overcome? Is it yourself? A spouse? A parent?

My friends, there is a greater hero to look to.

This episode of Bible in a Year provides a powerful image of the gospel. God is about to send judgment on Egypt. If the Hebrews wanted to be saved from His wrath, they needed to slay a lamb and paint its blood on their doorposts. Whoever is covered by the blood of the lamb will be saved.

This act was a foreshadowing of Jesus. He is the Lamb of God, whose blood was shed for our redemption. From Genesis to Malachi, the entire Old Testament points forward to Jesus as the hero. He is the promised hero, savior, and messiah.

The question for us today is this: Is Jesus our hero, too?

... that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.

Exodus 10:1

Pharoah thought he was a god… He was sorely mistaken.

This episode of Bible in a Year is inspired by Exodus 7-10, when God sends plague after plague to slowly break Pharoah’s will. The Egyptians may have worshiped Pharoah as a god, but the Lord of heaven and earth is alone worthy of worship. This story shows just how far God will go to redeem His people. These plagues were a declaration of war against the tyrannical regime of Egypt and the evil ideologies of their gods.

My friends, take heart in these truths:

God will prevail.

God will have the last word.

God will do whatever it takes to save his people.

The plagues, each a challenge to the Egyptian gods, symbolize the supremacy of the God of Israel. They also represent the relentless nature of God's pursuit of His people's freedom. Moses and Aaron's persistence in delivering God's message in the face of rejection is an inspiring example of faith and obedience.

Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.

Exodus 5:1

Freedom is one of the core themes of Scripture. Freedom from tyranny. Freedom from oppressive ideologies. And, ultimately, freedom from sin.

But freedom must be fought for. Moses fought for his people. And Jesus fought for our freedom from sin on the cross.

In this episode, inspired by Exodus 5, Moses and Aaron approach Pharaoh to demand the release of the Israelites. Instead of complying, Pharaoh increases the burden on the Israelites, leading to their suffering and despair. Power can be misused to oppress. It takes courage to stand against such tyranny.

Moses' encounter with Pharaoh is a pivotal moment, highlighting the struggle between the forces of oppression and the quest for freedom. It also exemplifies the theme of faith in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

The Israelites' journey toward liberation is fraught with challenges, but it begins with the audacity to confront their oppressor and demand their God-given right to freedom.

Then the Lord said, 'I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings.'

Exodus 3:7
You may run in shame, but God’s calling on your life will remain.

Moses ran and thought he was done with Egypt, the Hebrews, and a complicated life. He was wrong. God was grooming him to be a Shepherd of His people.

In this Bible in a Year episode, we witness Moses' transition from a life of privilege to a period of uncertainty. After killing an Egyptian and fleeing to Midian, Moses finds himself in a place of isolation, far from the life he once knew. Yet, it is here, in the wilderness, that God speaks to him through the burning bush, calling him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

This story is a powerful testament to how God often uses our periods of uncertainty and isolation to prepare us and call us to greater purposes. Moses' encounter with the burning bush is a pivotal moment where fear and doubt give way to a sense of divine mission.

It teaches us that God's plans often unfold in unexpected ways and that He can use our most challenging experiences to shape our destiny.

And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.

Genesis 45:5

Choosing mercy over judgment is the path of Christ. Joseph stood over his bowing brothers, able to execute them all and get his revenge. Instead, Joseph chose the path of mercy and forgiveness.

The climax of Joseph's story unfolds in Genesis 45-46, where he reveals his identity to his brothers. The moment is charged with emotion and a profound lesson on forgiveness. Joseph, who endured betrayal and hardship, now stands in a place of power, yet he chooses forgiveness over revenge.

His journey reminds us that our most painful experiences can be the fertile ground for spiritual and emotional growth. Joseph showed the strength his brothers were unable to. He gave them mercy.

Getting back at those who wronged you only shows that you’re as weak as they are.

Joseph's ability to forgive his brothers is not just an act of mercy towards them; it's a testament to his character and his deep understanding of God's sovereignty. He recognizes that his suffering was part of a larger plan to save many lives.

This story invites us to see our own trials through the lens of God's larger plan and to consider how forgiveness can lead us to a place of greater strength and purpose.

And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.

Genesis 42:8

Joseph thought he had moved on. He saved the entire ancient world from famine. He started a family. He thrived in the place that was meant to destroy him. His future looked bright… Until his past returned.

Joseph’s brothers traveled to Egypt to buy grain. The famine had left their whole family hungry. They thought they were speaking to an Egyptian governor. Instead, they were speaking to the brother they betrayed. Joseph is now faced with a choice. Does he process his past, forgive, and help them? Or does he allow bitterness to corrupt his heart and seek vengeance?

Jesus said that if we forgive others, God will be faithful to forgive us (Matthew 6:14). The depth of your relationship with God is often revealed in how you treat those who have mistreated you.

This episode of Bible in a Year is not just about survival during famine; it's a profound lesson on forgiveness, reconciliation, and the power of grace. Joseph, now in a position of power, faces his past hurts head-on as his brothers stand unknowingly before him. This story challenges us to consider our own responses to past hurts and the opportunity for reconciliation.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you.'

Genesis 41:39

Life isn’t a steady, upward trajectory toward success. It’s filled with highs and lows, peaks and valleys. One day, you could be in the prison; the next, you could be in the palace. Accept all these seasons as opportunities.

After interpreting Pharaoh's dreams about the impending famine, Joseph is appointed as the second-in-command in Egypt. His journey from the pit to the palace is not just a tale of personal triumph but a testament to God's providence and timing.

Joseph's story teaches us that our current struggles are not the end but rather a part of a larger, divine narrative. It shows how God can use our trials and tribulations to prepare and position us for greater responsibilities and blessings.

Joseph's rise to power is a narrative of patience, faith, and divine strategy. His ability to trust in God's plan, even in the face of injustice and hardship, is a powerful example of steadfast faith.

This passage reminds us that God can transform our greatest struggles into our greatest strengths. It encourages us to remain faithful and patient, knowing that in God's time, our current challenges can lead to significant breakthroughs and blessings.

But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.

Genesis 37:4

God gave Joseph grand dreams and favor above the rest of his brothers. This was a privilege young Joseph couldn’t handle at first. He flaunted his favor in front of his brothers. Joseph’s brother hated him for his dreams and the favor he had from his father. Their envy turned to action, leading to Joseph’s betrayal and sale into slavery.

This was the beginning of Joseph’s tumultuous journey. This chapter sets the stage for a story of God's providence, even in circumstances that seem utterly hopeless.

The story of Joseph is a profound example of how envy and misunderstanding can lead to deep family divisions and personal suffering. Yet, it also showcases how God can use even the worst situations for a greater purpose. Joseph's trials were not meaningless; they were steps towards fulfilling the destiny God had laid out for him.
