Dwelling in the Presence of the Lord
Living Under the Shadow of the Almighty
There is a beautiful place in God where our hearts become quiet and we simply dwell in His presence. We are not rushing in for a moment and then rushing away. We are learning to remain with Him—to make His presence our home.
Psalm 91:1 says:
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
To dwell means to remain, abide, stay, and make our home there. God is inviting us into more than an occasional encounter with Him. He desires a life in which we become increasingly conscious of His nearness.
There is something especially beautiful about the words “under the shadow of the Almighty.” They speak of being overshadowed by God—covered by His presence, sheltered beneath His care, and resting in the nearness of the One who is greater than everything that surrounds us.
When His presence overshadows us, everything else begins to lose its power to dominate our attention. Fear does not seem so large when we become aware of how great our God is. The noise of the world begins to quiet. Our striving begins to cease. Our hearts become still.
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Sometimes the deepest experience of God comes not through saying more, but through becoming still before Him. We sit with Him. We worship Him. We listen. We allow His peace to settle over our hearts.
There is healing in His presence.
There is rest in His presence.
There is safety in His presence.
There is peace in His presence.
And there is a deep intimacy with the Father that develops when we learn to remain there.
David understood this longing when he wrote:
“One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.”
—Psalm 27:4
David wanted more than what God could give him. He wanted God Himself. He wanted to behold the beauty of the Lord.
This is the heart of dwelling.
It is saying, Lord, I don’t simply want to visit Your presence when I need something. I want to live with You. I want my heart to become Your dwelling place, and I want Your presence to become the dwelling place of my heart.
Jesus used another beautiful word for this: abide.
“Abide in me, and I in you.”
—John 15:4
What an invitation. We abide in Him, and He abides in us.
There comes a place in our relationship with God where we begin to understand that we do not have to continually struggle to reach Him. He is already near. His Spirit dwells within His people. We learn to turn our attention toward Him and recognize the presence that has been with us all along.
And as we dwell there, something happens to us.
His presence changes us.
The longer we behold Him, the more our hearts begin to reflect Him. His peace begins to replace our turmoil. His love begins to soften us. His compassion begins to flow through us. His strength begins to replace our weakness.
We become a people who have been overshadowed by the Almighty.
And perhaps that is one of God’s deepest invitations to His church today:
Come closer.
Be still.
Remain with Me.
Dwell in My presence.
There is a secret place in God where the soul can rest. There is a Father’s house where we are welcomed. There is a shadow beneath which we can abide.
And in that place we discover that His presence is not merely somewhere we go.
His presence becomes our home.
Prayer
Father, draw me into the secret place with You. Teach me what it means to dwell in Your presence and to abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Quiet everything within me that keeps me from recognizing Your nearness. Let Your presence overshadow me. Cover me with Your peace. Surround me with Your love. Let me rest safely and securely in You.
Lord, I want to behold Your beauty. I want to know You more deeply. I do not want merely to visit Your presence; I want to learn to live there.
Make my heart Your dwelling place, and let Your presence become the dwelling place of my heart.
Teach me to be still before You, to abide in You, and to carry the beauty, peace, love, and healing of Your presence wherever I go.
Let me dwell in You, Lord, and let Your presence dwell richly in me.
