At 10 AM on Sunday, December 17 -- after the 9:30 sit -- the Dharma Discussion will be on the Metta Sutta, a fundamental teaching of the Buddha. Carol, Cecilia and Sam will facilitate a reading, meditation and discussion on how we can use the practice of loving kindness in times of war, conflict and injustice.

No need to read the sutta in advance; we will have handouts on Sunday. However, for those who might wish to read it in advance, this is the translation we will use:

Dharma Discussion Sunday:

Those of us who have recently read and talked about the Pema Chodron book How You Live is How You Die would like to invite members this Sunday to engage in a discussion about the dying process. Specifically, we'd like to talk about our wishes for our own death, our hopes for how we can help those we love, and our plans for how we can support each member of the Sangha in their own process of dying.

Please join us with your thoughts and questions this Sunday from 10:00-10:30, after our 9:30 sit.

Warmly,
The Sunday Dharma Discussion Group

Sam Johnson will deliver the dharma talk this Sunday on the subject: Is it really just a small world after all? Here is a quote for consideration ahead of the talk:
"Bhikkhus, I say that the end of the world cannot be known, seen, or reached by travelling. Yet, bhikkhus, I also say that without reaching the end of the world there is no making an end to suffering. (SN 35.116)"

Please join us after the Sunday sit, in person or online.

The Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center will continue to offer 1/2 hour Dharma Discussions after our Sunday meditation periods. The "sits" are at 9:30 a.m., the discussions at 10:00 a.m.

On Sunday, October 18, the topic is "What Does It Mean to Live a Spiritual Life"?

On Sunday, October 25, the topic is "Storytelling." We will spend the half hour telling each other stories, and perhaps talking together about them. A few of us will be prepared with a story to tell; time permitting, others can offer their own stories. These can be stories from the Buddhist tradition, from our favorite children's books, from our own lives, or from other branches of the rich and ancient oral tradition that ties humans together. Many may relate to the idea of living a spiritual life and/or illuminate aspects of our practice as compassionate human beings. At a minimum, we will get to know each other better through telling stories and discussing them.

Please join us on Zoom for what promises to be two illuminating and enjoyable gatherings.

The NBMC will hold an online Dharma Discussion on Sunday, August 30, after the morning "sit." The topic comes in the form of a question: "Why am I here?" Our discussion facilitator, Sam Johnson, explains that the word "here" carries at least five levels of implication. 1. time 2. place 3. self-view 4. intention 5. need. Discussion should run no more than a 1/2 hour.

Please join other sangha members for the "sit" at 9:30 a.m and the discussion at 10:00.
