This program explores the cycle of growth that comes from introspection, with the message that moving through painful times leads to transcendence. Modern times find us in a culture war, a battle of radical love against radical derision. It’s a philosophical Age of Anxiety in the middle of a capitalist attention economy. When the media vilifies neighborism and identity becomes illegal, where are we to turn for strength and affirmation?

Like Sun Through Eyelids meditates on impermanence, connection to nature, and acceptance of the divine as tools to wade through the mud. Every human has a right to their own life and to realize their potential. No matter where you are in the cycle of grief-to-joy, poem|music is here to nudge you forward. You are on the right path; our hand is on your back.

First UCC is honored to present:

"Why We Record" exhibit

Palestinians have long recorded their reality so future generations would know what truly happened, through art, writing, photography, storytelling, and personal archives.

"Why We Record" honors the artists, journalists, poets, and record keepers who continue to bear witness in the face of erasure.

We invite the broader Northfield community to view, read, and spend time with this exhibit and to share their reflections in the Guest Book. Program guides are available for interpreting it. The exhibit is on loan from Northfielders for Justice in Palestine/Israel. Explore and experience this exhibit at First UCC until mid-June.

This discussion of Omar El Akkad's book will dive into the "breakup letter with the West." As a resident of the US and a renowned international journalist, he speaks to everyone who is grappling with human rights and international law, including but not only in Palestine.
