The fun of Halloween is that it gives recognition to life’s dark forces. And that we have found ways to appease and coax those dark forces that live in our hearts we dress our children up as ghouls and goblins, and then buy them off with candy and apples. Halloween gives us a mock sort of control of the world. This Intergenerational service is designed to mix our playful energy to get at the hard stuff.

*Please bring a photo or Memorabilia from a family member or loved one for our Day of the Dead altar.

Rivers, bays, lakes, brooks, seashores all breed life. This is because water breeds rich relationships. So integral is water to civilization that anthropologists don’t look for our ancestors where there is no water. And like all humans before, on this water planet of ours, on the first official church service of the year, we use it as a symbol of the ways we come together.

Neuro-scientist and now inadvertent theologian David Eagleman has attempted to create a new philosophy which rejects both the claims of traditional religions and the rigidity of modern atheists. He has called it Possiblianism. Come today for an introduction by Rev. Steve to this modern effort to carve out more hopeful, speculative, and creative middle ground for all the big questions all that might be.

In our long-held UU religious tradition of seeking wisdom in unlikely, non-traditional places, today with the help of psychiatrist David Dutton, author of The Wisdom of Psychopaths we will bravely and unconventionally peer into the clean if extreme minds of serial killers and Sociopaths. Although, we might do so reluctantly, we will out of curiosity, and perhaps make an effort to uplift the inherent worth and dignity of all people, look to see what lessons in being effective might be there for the rest of us.

What Makes Us Tick asks and answers the question of what really drives us. Beyond and behind the reasons we think are why we do things. This sermon based on the book by Australian social commentator Hugh Mackay who asks, then reveals, what this tool might reveal for each of us.

On our last service of our church year will highlight the work being done by one of our own church families to bring education and technology into the hands of people in one of the world’s poorest countries. Come hear what life changing projects trustee Jen Hardy and her family “thehardybunch” are doing with “Tech Bridges to Malawi,” but feel free to check out their website. https://thehardybunch.org/techbtm/
