Some doctrines disappear because Scripture disproves them.

Others disappear because the culture makes them embarrassing.

That distinction matters.

R.C. Sproul’s argument about women wearing fabric head coverings in worship is uncomfortable precisely because the historic practice of the Church was remarkably consistent for centuries.

Then, within a relatively short period, it largely vanished.

So what changed?

Did Christians suddenly discover that 1 Corinthians 11:2–16 had been misunderstood for nearly two thousand years?

Maybe. Protestants should never treat tradition as infallible.

But we should at least have enough humility to ask whether **we changed because Scripture convinced us—or because the surrounding culture changed us.**

Paul does not ground his argument merely in Corinthian fashion.

He appeals to:
creation order,
male and female distinction,
headship,
angels,
nature,
and the practice of the churches.
— 1 Corinthians 11:3–16

That should make us hesitate before dismissing the passage with, “That was just cultural.”

And this is bigger than head coverings.

Modern Christians have become very skilled at discovering that nearly every biblical teaching offensive to modern sensibilities was apparently “just cultural.”

Male eldership.
Headship.
Sexual ethics.
Modesty.
Marriage.
Family order.

Eventually you have to wonder whether we are exegeting Scripture—or negotiating with the spirit of the age.

You do not have to agree with Sproul on head coverings to feel the weight of his question.

**Why did the Church change?**

If the answer is Scripture, show it from Scripture.

If the answer is that feminism taught us to be embarrassed by biblical distinctions between men and women, then repentance—not reinterpretation—is required.

The Church does not need to become more acceptable to modernity.

She needs to become more obedient to Christ.

7 Reasons Why the Members of a Church Do Not Walk in Unity

Church unity is not merely the absence of conflict; it is the visible expression of believers who are united in Christ, walking in love, truth, and the power of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul exhorts believers to be "endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3). Sadly, many churches struggle with division because they neglect biblical principles that preserve unity.

1. They Lack Genuine Love for One Another

John 13:34–35

Jesus declared that love is the distinguishing mark of His disciples. Genuine Christian love is sacrificial, patient, and seeks the good of others. When love is replaced by selfishness, criticism, or indifference, unity begins to crumble. A church may have sound doctrine and excellent programs, but without love, its witness is weakened.

Application: Ask yourself, "Do my words and actions demonstrate Christlike love toward my fellow believers?"

2. Pride and Self-Importance

Proverbs 13:10

Pride is one of the greatest enemies of church unity. It insists on having its own way, refuses correction, and seeks recognition rather than God's glory. Pride creates unnecessary conflicts because it elevates self above others.

Humility, on the other hand, imitates Christ, who "made Himself nothing" and served others (Philippians 2:3–8).

Application: Unity flourishes where humility replaces self-promotion.

3. Failure to Practice Forgiveness

Ephesians 4:31–32

No church is perfect because no believer is perfect. Offenses will occur. The question is not whether we will be hurt but how we will respond.

Believers are commanded to forgive one another just as God forgave us in Christ. Bitterness, resentment, and an unwillingness to forgive create deep divisions within the body of Christ.

Application: Forgiveness is not optional—it is essential for Christian fellowship.

4. Gossip and Slander

Proverbs 16:28

Words have the power to build up or destroy. Gossip spreads suspicion, damages reputations, and breaks trust among believers. Satan often uses careless speech to divide what Christ died to unite.

Instead of speaking behind someone's back, Scripture calls believers to speak truth in love and pursue peace.

Application: Before speaking, ask: Will these words glorify God and strengthen His church?

5. Spiritual Immaturity

1 Corinthians 3:1–3

Immature believers are easily offended, jealous, argumentative, and driven by personal preferences. Spiritual maturity produces patience, wisdom, discernment, and self-control.

A mature church focuses less on personal comfort and more on God's glory and the spiritual growth of others.

Application: Grow daily through God's Word, prayer, and faithful obedience.

6. Personal Interests Above God's Mission

Matthew 6:33

When believers become more concerned with personal agendas, traditions, or preferences than with Christ's kingdom, unity suffers.

A healthy church keeps the Great Commission at the center. The mission of making disciples must always take priority over personal ambitions.

Application: Ask, "Am I advancing Christ's kingdom or merely defending my own preferences?"

7. Failure to Walk in the Spirit

Galatians 5:16–26

The flesh naturally produces conflict, envy, selfish ambition, and division. The Holy Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Church unity is ultimately a work of the Holy Spirit in believers who daily submit themselves to His leading.

Application: A Spirit-filled church is marked by Christlike character rather than fleshly behavior.

Conclusion

Church unity is not achieved through human effort alone but through lives transformed by the gospel. When believers genuinely love one another, walk in humility, forgive freely, guard their speech, grow in spiritual maturity, pursue God's mission, and walk in the Spirit, the church becomes a powerful testimony of Christ to the world.

May every believer heed Paul's exhortation:

"Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
— Ephesians 4:3 (KJV)

A united church glorifies God, strengthens believers, and proclaims the gospel with credibility to a watching world.
