What is a footstone? Footstones are smaller stones placed at the foot of the grave. They often bear the initials of the person who is buried there. They gained popularity in the 1800's but over time, all too often, they have been removed to make mowing the grass more efficient. The Wetmore has 9 known surviving footstones from the 1800's. By comparison, (Pioneer Cemetery notwithstanding) the Oakland Cemetery has none. Here are some before and after shots of Wetmore footstones. Some are matched with the correct person, some are not. All to be researched and resolved as part of the Wetmore Cemetery restoration.
