Two years ago, a small group of about 25 people gathered with a prayer and a hope that God would plant a church. Today, we look back with gratitude at what only God could have done! This week we opened 1 Thessalonians 1:2-10, where Paul celebrates a young church not for its programs or personality, but for faith that works, love that labors, and hope that endures. The same gospel that transformed Thessalonica is still transforming lives today.

🎉 Two Years of Vertical Church North! 🎉

As we celebrate our second birthday, we can’t help but look back and thank God for all He has done over the last year.

This year, we’ve seen people take steps of faith, relationships deepen, new families become part of our church family, and people grow in what it means to Worship, Walk, Work, and Witness.

We’ve gathered for prayer and worship, launched new small groups, studied God’s Word together through Vertical Institute, celebrated baptism, invested in our kids and families, strengthened our men’s and women’s ministries, and continued creating spaces where real community can grow.

Through everything, God has continued to remind us that the church is about so much more than a building or a weekly service. It is a family of people following Jesus together.

We’re incredibly thankful for every person who has prayed, served, given, or simply showed up this year.

And we believe God is only getting started.

One of the most tender moments in this passage is two simple words: "and Peter." The first message of the risen Christ specifically included the disciple who had denied Him three times. That is the gospel. Jesus does not save people who have performed well enough. He saves sinners.

"He saved others, but he cannot save himself." They meant it as mockery. They had no idea they were preaching the gospel. Because if Jesus saves himself, he cannot save us.

This Sunday we walked through Mark 15, the crucifixion, death, and burial of Jesus. The cross is not a symbol of defeat. It is the greatest act of love in human history. Jesus had the power to come down. He refused. Not because the nails were stronger, but because his love for sinners kept him there.

The curtain was torn. The way to God is open. You do not come to him because you are worthy, you come because he is.

What if the greatest act of injustice in history was actually the greatest act of love?

In Mark 15, we meet Barabbas, guilty, condemned, deserving of death and we watch him walk free while an innocent man takes his place. That innocent man is Jesus. And here is the staggering truth: that is not just Barabbas' story. It is ours.

We stand guilty before a holy God. Yet Jesus, the sinless king, willingly wore a crown of thorns, endured mockery and shame, and walked toward the cross, not because he was powerless to stop it, but because he chose to go there for us. As 2 Corinthians 5 reminds us, he who knew no sin became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God.

If you have never placed your faith in Christ, today is the day to stop defending yourself and receive the substitute God has provided.
