We need to do better.

Not because churches do not care, but because caring well requires awareness.

For families who have experienced the loss of a child, a sermon, song, story, image, or holiday can bring grief rushing back without warning.

Sometimes a simple word of caution before sharing a difficult story or image can give a grieving parent a moment to prepare their heart.

The Church should be a place of refuge.

And refuge begins with compassion, awareness, and a willingness to learn.

Mom and Dad, please know that we see you, and we remember your child.

Whether your child was here for moments or many years, their life mattered.

Today may feel a little heavier.

Some days are heavier than others. Some days, you may understand why. Other days, the heaviness may come without warning or explanation.

There is no timeline when it comes to child loss grief. This kind of grief does not always follow the rules of what others may expect grief to look like. It can come in waves, in quiet moments, on ordinary days, and sometimes without words.

If today is one of those heavier days, and you do not know how to explain why, please know you are not alone. For those who have lost a child, we understand the lack of words. We understand the unknown. We understand that some days simply hurt more.

Today, take one breath at a time. One step at a time.

And if you need a little extra support today, that is completely normal.

A few ways we may be able to support you:

When the days feel heavier, please know you do not have to carry them alone.

Today, we see you. We see your pain. And we remember your child with you. ๐Ÿ’›

After the loss of a child, memories from the days and weeks surrounding that loss can become part of you in many different ways.

Some memories remain incredibly clear. You may remember the smallest details, the sounds, the room, what someone said, what you were wearing, or exactly how something felt. These memories can replay in vivid color and bring a wide range of emotions. And not all of those emotions have to be sad.

There may also be gaps in memory. Hours, days, or even longer periods may feel missing. You may remember one moment and the next, but have no idea how you got from one to the other.

Then there may be quiet moments when the loss is not at the front of your mind. Maybe for a few minutes. Maybe for several hours. Maybe even for an entire day.

All of these experiences can be part of grief.

A mom or dad never stops remembering. They may remember the hopes and dreams their child had, or the hopes and dreams they had for their child. They may see another child, teenager, or adult and quietly wonder, โ€œThis is what they would have been like.โ€

When a mom or dad loses a child, they do not stop being their mom or dad.

Sometimes it can be difficult to put into words how you are truly feeling after the loss of a child. The Self Check-In guide offers a gentle place to pause, reflect, and better understand what your body, mind, and heart may be experiencing.

Use it once, often, or whenever you feel you need it.
