Now, some people think the Bible is a book of rules, telling you what you should and shouldn’t do. The Bible certainly does have some rules in it. They show you how life works best. But the Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. It’s about God and what he has done. — Sally Lloyd-Jones

The Trumpet Call
Numbers 29:1-6

The Feast of Trumpets signifies the start of the Jewish civil year. It marks the end of the agricultural period and the beginning of the High Holy Days, a rapid succession of appointed days for recognizing God's glory and giving honor to Him. Many ascribe the days to correspond with the creation of the world in Genesis. The sound of the trumpets was a call to all Jews to repent and return to a right relationship with God. Special sacrifices were made to honor the day, as were made at all of the feasts.

All of the appointed days and times in the Old Testament serve as a foreshadowing to the Messiah. Many see the Feast of Trumpets as not having been fulfilled yet, and will see its fulfillment in the second coming of Jesus. But we can see a reflection of it already in what has come about. When we come to a saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we begin a new time in our lives. That begins with God's call to our hearts to repent, a trumpet call awakening us from our sinful lifelessness. Much like the special sacrifices of old were made to acknowledge God's sovereignty, we also acknowledge Him as the creator of all, the giver of our lives, and offer our lives to Him as living sacrifices. Jesus Himself provides the perfect sin sacrifice, one that is more than sufficient to cover our past and future sins. We are born into newness of life, preparing to begin our journey with Him.

Of course, we will still see the second coming, which will serve as a much more complete fulfillment of God's plan. Then we will see the Jewish nation, God's chosen people, come to repentance and trust in the One we learned of so long ago. We will see the old earth pass away, and the new earth created. And we will all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet. For the trumpet shall sound, the dead shall be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. But we don't have to wait. We can already see the fulfillment of this in our lives today.

Father, we acknowledge you as Lord of creation and our lives. We offer ourselves to you in gratitude for you offering yourself for us on the cross. Thank you for bringing us into a new life with you. As we live our lives, help us to remember the call to repentance we have made. Let it strengthen our resolve to continue in our relationship with you. In Jesus' name, amen.

The Bible is powerful and able to change your life from the inside out. No other means is given by God to accomplish such a task. The Spirit of God, who is at work in the hearts of Christians, uses the Word of God to transform them into Christlike people. — Nate Pickowicz

Clear a Path
Numbers 21:1-3

Do you want to be free from the power of sin? You need to be willing to destroy the strongholds of that sin. You have to be ready to tear down the altars, to destroy the cities where that sin lives in your life, even if in and of themselves they are neither good nor evil.

When Israel was commanded to occupy the land, they were told to completely destroy the previous inhabitants, because God knew that the presence of other cultures would corrupt the Israelites. When Joshua took Jericho, he commanded the people to not take any of the spoils. Achan chose in his greed to ignore his orders. When Saul conquered the Amalekites, he was told to destroy everything that was a part of them, down to the livestock. Instead, he chose to try to keep the best for himself, and offered it to God only when he was caught. After Solomon died and the kingdom was split, it was often noted that, even in the times of godly kings, Israel allowed the altars in the high places to pagan gods to remain.

Today, we want freedom from sin, but we are unwilling to tear down the places where sin can creep in. We want freedom from lust, but want to continue to watch provocative movies. We want freedom from hate, but continue to indulge in aggressive political campaigns. We want freedom from covetousness, but continue to keep a close eye on the rich and famous. There is freedom from sin through the power of Jesus' shed blood, but we need to be willing to deny ourselves, to take up our cross daily in order to follow Him. Our walk with Christ will be so much sweeter if we do our part to avoid placing stumbling blocks in our own path.

Father, thank you for your forgiveness and your promise to release us from the bo***ge of the law and of sin. We know that we could not live for you without your help. Show us where we are sabotaging our own walk with you. Give us the strength to turn away from anything that may cause us to trip, so that we can grow even more in your will. In Jesus' name, amen.

God’s way is perfect and his Word is flawless. A perfect God could have nothing less than perfect communication with his people. It is we who read hastily, skip prayer, and fail to meditate on his Word, who find it confusing. — Tim Keller

The Joy of Judgment
Psalm 98:1-9

What do you think of when you think about the day of judgment? Most of the time we think of fire and brimstone, the wrath of God, anger, destruction, plagues, famine, war. We think of the condemnation of sin, banishment to hell, weeping and gnashing of teeth. Judgment is not a pleasant thought in that sense.

But, should that be our worry regarding that day? After all, the Lord has shown us the way of salvation. We are no longer under condemnation. The day of judgment marks the day of the Lord's triumphant return. It signals the time when we will see Him as He is, in full clarity, unveiled. It begins the reign of Christ, when He will rule over all in love and righteousness. There will be no more injustice, no more greed, no more hatred, no more sin! We will be changed, our perfected spirits bursting out of our frail physical bodies prone to sin and the results of it! We will not be able to resist joining the heavenly chorus, praising God for the wonderful gift He has given!

And it is a wonderful gift, made available to everyone the world over. He has revealed Himself to all through His Son and His word. For those who have grasped this gift, the day of judgment is not a day of dread, but a day of rejoicing! Let's live that out in our lives, so that others may wonder what it is about the hope that is in us!

When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus
We'll sing and shout the victory!

Father, we know the day is coming when Jesus will return. We so look forward to that day! Help us to not fall into the despair of the unsaved, but rather give us the joy of salvation. Help us to share that joy with all around, showing them the path you showed us. In Jesus' name, amen.
