Falling From Heaven
Many Christians understand "Satan falling from heaven" as a historical event involving a literal rebellion in heaven. However, when viewed through the Bible's parabolic language, a deeper picture emerges.
Spiritually, heaven often represents the kingdom of God among His people, the place where God dwells with His Church. Likewise, to fall from heaven is a picture of losing favor, position, or fellowship with God because of judgment.
During the Church Age, God restrained evil within the corporate church. Wheat and tares grew together under His oversight, and the Church enjoyed God's protection and blessing.
But the Bible teaches that a time would come when judgment would begin at the house of God (1 Peter 4:17). When that judgment arrived, the Church experienced a spiritual "fall from heaven." This does not mean that buildings literally fell from the sky, but that God's special relationship with the corporate church was removed.
This helps explain why Scripture uses several similar images:
- Stars falling from heaven.
- Stones being cast down.
- The temple being left without one stone upon another.
- The powers of heaven being shaken.
All of these point to God's judgment upon His own house.
At the same time, Satan is portrayed as exalting himself into the temple of God and ruling there. This is not a contradiction. As God's restraint is removed, Satan is allowed to occupy a place of authority within the outward church. The result is widespread deception, false teaching, and spiritual blindness.
The Bible then describes a final and complete casting down. Satan and his angels lose their place forever. The old heaven passes away, and a new heaven and new earth come into view. The judgment that began with the Church reaches its conclusion, while God's people are delivered through Christ.
