The countdown to Pentecost continues! Today, we read from this lovely section of the Westminster Confession of Faith:

The Holy Spirit, the third Person in the Trinity, proceeding from the Father and the Son, of the same substance and equal in power and glory, is, together with the Father and the Son, to be believed in, loved, obeyed, and worshipped throughout all ages.
He is the Lord and Giver of life, everywhere present, and is the source of all good thoughts, pure desires, and holy counsels in men. By him the prophets were moved to speak the Word of God, and all the writers of the Holy Scriptures inspired to record infallibly the mind and will of God. The dispensation of the gospel is especially committed to him. He prepares the way for it, accompanies it with his persuasive power, and urges its message upon the reason and conscience of men, so that they who reject its merciful offer are not only without excuse, but are also guilty of resisting the Holy Spirit.

The countdown to Pentecost is here! This Sunday, May 24, is the birthday of the universal Church. We look good to be nearly two thousand years old!

This beautiful expression of our faith from the Heidelberg Catechism will start our Pentecost Countdown:

Q. What do you believe
concerning “the Holy Spirit”?
A. First, that the Spirit, with the Father and the Son,
is eternal God.
Second, that the Spirit is given also to me,
so that, through true faith,
he makes me share in Christ and all his benefits,
comforts me,
and will remain with me forever.

Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

A. That I am not my own, but belong— body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Gratitude changes the way we see the world. This Sunday, May 17, we gather to offer our thanks for the many ways God is moving in our lives.

We are sending prayers of support to Pastor Elizabeth as she completes an out of state doctoral residency this week. In her absence, we are honored to welcome Tamara Boggs to the pulpit to share the word. Our worship will be lifted by the Sanctuary Choir as they offer J.S. Bach’s moving anthem, “The Lord is Our Refuge.”

Come find a moment of peace and sacred space with us tomorrow morning.

In an effort to stay culturally relevant, we have consulted the leading authority on Gen Z and Gen Alpha slang. His name is Ben Rhodes. He has your church announcements for the week. Kindly update your slang accordingly before Sunday.
