Did you know that Park Hill’s campus almost looked vastly different than it does today? Before the current mid-century modern sanctuary was built, this was the architectural proposal! A few noticeable differences include the sanctuary directly facing JKK Boulevard, the primary education building being considerably longer, and the proposed addition of a perpendicular educational wing.

The current sanctuary was turned around to sit perpendicular with JFK Boulevard to accommodate more seating. Modern for its time, the space featured no choir loft - the choir and organ sat to the left of the congregation. When a pipe organ was installed in the late 1970s, a large 3-tier loft was built on the right side of the platform.

Instead of expanding the original education building, a new wing, later named the Bill Clampitt Educational Center, was constructed, and the balcony of the old sanctuary was converted to classroom space. Fellowship Hall was converted into a parlor, and an office complex with an extensive library, two restrooms, and a conference room were built to connect the two education building wings to the new sanctuary! The solarium was also installed at that time.

Generations worship series continues through September. Join us as we celebrate the blessings of God throughout our treasured past as we anticipate a beautiful future.

For you shall go out in joy and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

The people called Presbyterians first came to North Little Rock in 1895. The first Presbyterian Church in the city, then known as Argenta, was organized in 1899. Half a century later, a new congregation was formed to serve the needs of the fledgling Park Hill community in 1948.

That early group met first in a movie theater before moving into their first sanctuary: an old military chapel. The bustling Church School was soon filled to overflowing, remedied by the addition of a two-story education building. Not long after, that building was doubled in size with the completion of the two-story Clampitt Building.

Needing even more room, an imposing Mid-century Modern sanctuary was built on the other side of the block in the 1960s. An office complex was built between the structures, connecting the old with the new. The former sanctuary was turned into a large fellowship hall, later named Steen Hall. The new sanctuary seated 400 and featured a new organ, a choir loft on the ground to the left of the congregation, and modern chancel furnishings, including a large Lord’s Table, a round pulpit rising above the congregation, a hand-carved baptismal font, and a semi-circular lectern. A few decades later, a large choir loft was built and the new Handbell Choir took up residence in the old choir area. Eventually, chambers were built on either side above the chancel and a pipe organ was installed.

This September, we are going through the archives and rediscovering our treasured past. Every Sunday, we will worship according to the orders of worship used by the congregation throughout its many decades.

By the grace of God, countless individuals have given of their time, talent, and treasure to make Park Hill Presbyterian Church what it is today: a home for all in the heart of the city. There’s room for you to become part of the story. Join us, Sundays at 11am.

Gratitude changes the way we see the world. This Sunday, May 17, we gather to offer our thanks for the many ways God is moving in our lives.

We are sending prayers of support to Pastor Elizabeth as she completes an out of state doctoral residency this week. In her absence, we are honored to welcome Tamara Boggs to the pulpit to share the word. Our worship will be lifted by the Sanctuary Choir as they offer J.S. Bach’s moving anthem, “The Lord is Our Refuge.”

Come find a moment of peace and sacred space with us tomorrow morning.
