Juneteenth Celebration

Unity Hosts the Five Points Cluster

Pope Leo recently apologized for the way the Catholic Church participated in the slave trade. Human emancipation is something we still struggle with as weaponized racism runs rampant but change comes. It took a long time for the Union soldiers to reach Galveston, but they did. America still hasn't fully dealt with the legacy of slavery, and a new form of Jim Crow manifests itself in our day and age, but the troops made it to Galveston, and together we will make it to a better tomorrow.

Flourishing Together Through Stories

One of the most powerful - and often most underrecognized - sources of mutual flourishing is storytelling. Stories are the threads that weave us together. They are how we bond. The stories passed down and shared widely are the means by which we become “a people.” The stories we share with our children are the way they become, not just adults, but human. When others are brave enough to share their stories of pain, we discover that our suffering is not unique and our healing is not out of reach. When we feel empty, the stories of others fill us. When we feel weak or scared, the stories of others give us strength. One thing you can count on: Where you find flourishing, stories are sure to be close by.

Identify one of your best stories about flourishing together and then share it.

So how should you go about this? Well, for some of us, “Find a great story about flourishing together” is all the direction we need. But for most of us some prompts will help. A list of such prompts is below. If none of the prompts resonate with you, feel free to simply pick a story from your personal history that captures what life has taught you about flourishing together.

Flourishing Together Story Prompts

Tell a story about…

The bedtime story that has stuck with you and continues to shape your values.
Being rescued by the kindness of strangers.
Finding community where you least expected it.
Coming to believe that “no one is free until all of us are free.”
Discovering that true community is “the place where the person you least want to live with always lives.”
Being truly seen for the first time.
Your church bringing you back to life.
Being saved by your sibling.
The bravest person you know (and how they enable you to be brave).
How learning to be alone made your relationships better.
Finding your “chosen family.”
Learning to say, “I hurt” or “I need help.”

The Birthday of America

Join us for a spectacular celebration of American culture and music as we present a fantastic concert program that promises to be a highlight of the summer. This year, we honor the spirit and history of our nation with a carefully curated selection of iconic pieces, featuring George Gershwin’s beloved Rhapsody in Blue, which masterfully blends classical music with jazz influences, creating a sound that is uniquely American. Alongside this masterpiece, we will be performing Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s stirring 1812 Overture, renowned for its powerful orchestration and the use of cannon fire, which evokes the resilience and triumph of the human spirit during times of conflict.

In addition to these classical works, the concert will include a variety of uplifting patriotic songs that resonate deeply with the American experience. Among these, we will perform "America the Beautiful," a timeless anthem that celebrates the natural beauty and ideals of our great nation. The evening will also feature a medley of beloved patriotic favorites, including "You're A Grand Old Flag" and "God Bless America," which have become synonymous with national pride and unity. Finally, no celebration of America would be complete without the stirring notes of "The Star Spangled Banner," a powerful reminder of our history and the sacrifices made for our freedom.

We are thrilled to present an exceptional lineup of talented musicians who will bring these works to life. Pegasus: The Orchestra from New York City, under the skilled baton of Karén Hakobyan, who serves as both conductor and music director. His expertise and passion for music will ensure an unforgettable performance. The evening will also feature the enchanting voice of Lisa Sheppard Hadley, whose vocal prowess will elevate the patriotic selections to new heights, and the extraordinary pianist Asiya Korepanova, whose interpretation of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is sure to leave the audience breathless.

Tickets for this extraordinary event are priced at just $30.00, providing an accessible opportunity for everyone to experience an evening of cultural enrichment and celebration. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this memorable occasion as we come together to honor the Birthday of America through the power of music.

TODAY AT UNITY CHURCH

Sunday, June 7, 2026 10:30 am

Pride in Love

We celebrate pride because we celebrate love. Love makes us better, more connected, and more whole as human beings. Love has a diversity of shapes and forms, and literally makes us live longer and better. Partnered adults have a longer average lifespan because we flourish when we are with others. We sleep better in the presence of our beloved. We recognize that generations of fear-mongering and romance policing are at odds with the power of the celebration of love.
