We recognize we sin. We are all guilty before a holy God and fall short of His glory.
If God is just—and He is—there must be a penalty for sin. He does not set justice aside for mercy.
At the same time He is loving and merciful, so He sent the Son. Jesus lived the perfect life we failed to live, died in our place on the cross, was buried, and rose again according to the Scriptures.
If we believe and repent, we have this hope of eternal life in Him.

We’ve been seeing reformation centered on the Word of God.
That Word brought conviction of sin. Conviction led to repentance. Repentance is more than “I’m sorry”—it causes us to turn.
They turned to the Word, covenanted together, and committed to restore Jerusalem.
The same Word still convicts and still points us to Christ.

Where is your joy rooted—circumstances, or the faithfulness of God?
Nehemiah 11–12 shows Israel celebrating the restored wall with thanksgiving and singing after years of opposition. Some were called to leave comfort and live in a ruined city. They went because they had covenanted together. God gave them great joy, and their rejoicing was heard far away.
Joy grows when we serve in hard and hidden places, when we pursue holiness, when we prepare our hearts for worship, and when we worship and give together as a response to who God is—not as a ritual.
We are all guilty before a holy God. He is just and merciful. He sent His Son to live perfectly, die in our place, and rise again. Repent and believe. Find your joy in Him.

I had a buddy on my last ship in the same season of faith.
To separate from that culture, we spent time together recognizing this: as Christians we can't talk like sailors.
We encouraged one another and held each other accountable because we both professed our faith publicly.
Just as we should do together as the church body.

What does it look like to live in obedience to the commands of God from a heart of gratefulness?
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind—with every fiber of who you are. Be willing to turn everything about yourself over to the One who owns it.
Jesus said this is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself.
On these two commands depend the entire law and the prophets. They summarize the Ten Commandments and show us the pattern: address your vertical relationship with God first, and let that shape your horizontal relationships.

Where’s the happy ending? Where are we going?
This section of the text is a call to covenant renewal. The people of Israel go through the Word of God, are convicted by it, and realize restoration must be around the Person and Word of God.
The Word brings conviction of sin that leads to repentance and a confession of God’s faithfulness—despite repeated failures. In view of that faithfulness they seek covenant renewal.
That demonstrates the first way we should live: fully committed to our faith in Jesus.

This is how we live together as the body and bride of Christ.
He purchased us with His own blood and has gone to prepare a place.
If we believe and repent, the Holy Spirit’s regenerating work brings us to confess we are sinners in need of His grace. We turn from our sin and walk in Christ because of what He has already done.
In Christ we can know we will be in the presence of God the Father—because of the work of the Son, by the power of the Spirit, for all eternity.

Covenant Sunday is coming. Why do we treat it as a big deal?

In Nehemiah 10, after confessing God’s faithfulness through Israel’s failures, the people made a binding, public, specific covenant. They committed together how they would live individually: set apart from those who would pull them from God, honoring rest and worship, canceling crushing debt, and giving first fruits so they would not neglect the house of God.

A church covenant is not what saves you. Jesus is. But regenerated hearts commit to God publicly and specifically. We walk together, assemble together, give cheerfully, and live in alignment so we can encourage one another and guard the church’s witness.
Obedience flows from gratitude for the cross, not from trying to earn righteousness.

Are you undone by the awe of God’s faithfulness?
When we consider that while we were yet enemies, Christ died for us in our place, that we could be restored to God—not because of us, but in spite of us.
And when we take in the Bible and see that the whole story from Genesis to Revelation is to reveal our need for Christ, Christ’s work, and Christ’s future coming—how can we not be blown away that undeserving sinners like us would be loved and rescued by such a faithful God?
