The Courage to Clean House: Coming to Calvary, pt.1
Scripture: Matthew 21:12-17

When the chief priests and scribes saw that Jesus had cleansed the temple and healed the blind and the lame, they were indignant (angry; annoyed).
- How come the chief priests and scribes weren't indignant about the financial exploitation going on in the church but took issue with the celebration of healing?

Then those who were healed asked Jesus if He heard the chief priests and scribes, to which the Lord responded saying, "Yes Have you never read, 'Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have perfected praise?"
- What Jesus was emphasizing here is that babes have not been corrupted by greed.

Then Jesus left them, went out of the city of Bethany, and lodged there.
- He addressed the issue then got back to the mission.

The Courage to Clean House: Coming to Calvary, pt.1
Scripture: Matthew 21:12-17

After cleansing the temple, the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple and He healed them.

- During that time, the blind and the lame had to stay separate from the rest of the congregation who were in the inner courts of the temple, so they congregated in the outer courts of the temple. This would suggest that they were there the whole time in need but they had so much going on in the temple that those who needed to find Jesus couldn't.

- Now that Jesus had cleansed the temple, those who were really hungry and thirsty for Him were able to come to Him. There were no longer any distractions.

The Courage to Clean House: Coming to Calvary, pt.1
Scripture: Matthew 21:12-17

Upon Jesus's arrival to the temple of God, He went into the temple. Jesus arrived at the temple and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, overturning the tables of money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. Jesus then said to them that they have turned a house of prayer into a den of thieves.

- He still showed up and believed it to be worth the time to congregate with the church.

- Jesus didn't like the buyers or the sellers. Everything that was making the church a marketplace was thrown out.

- Doves were one of the elements necessary for worship and offering, so there were people selling and purchasing doves at the temple when they should have brought their sacrifice and offering into the temple. Why didn't they purpose in their hearts and minds to come to the temple prepared to have an intimate exchange with God?

Sermon: Blueprint for Being Blessed
Scripture: Psalm 1

What does it mean to be blessed? How can we be blessed?

Verse 3 of Psalm 1 paints a picture of what a blessed man looks like.
- A blessed man is a like a tree planted by water. The tree is planted in a place where there is provision and refreshment. It cannot be easily moved. Its leaves will not wither and it will bring forth fruit in all seasons, and whatever he does shall prosper.

Sermon: Blueprint for Being Blessed
Scripture: Psalm 1

What does it mean to be blessed? How can we be blessed?

Verse two of Psalm 1 says to delight in the law of the Lord and meditate on it day and night.
- To have lasting meaningful contentment, you delight in the law of the Lord because it provides you with structure and order.
- You can’t delight in something you don’t have familiarity with. The blessed man meditates on the word of the Lord day and night.

Sermon: Blueprint for Being Blessed
Scripture: Psalm 1

What does it mean to be blessed? How can we be blessed?

Verse one of Psalm 1 indicates a continuum of sin, from lapse (walk) to lifestyle (seat). It starts with a description of walking in the council of the ungodly, then standing in the path of sinners, and finally to sitting in the seat of the scornful.

- It started with belief. Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly. You should not take advice from ungodly people, people who are not devoted and dedicated to the Lord.
- Don’t stand in the way of the sinner. There has to be a distinction between sinners and saints.
- If you stand in the way of sinner for too long (engage in the behaviors and actions of sinners for too long), you will sit in a seat of the scornful. In other words, you will be amongst the scornful to the extent that you aren’t even uncomfortable but content being there.

Sermon: Blueprint for Being Blessed
Scripture: Psalm 1

What does it mean to be blessed? How can we be blessed? Let’s take a look at Psalm 1, of the Book of Psalms.

“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: The Great I Am, pt. 6 (John 14:1–6):

• “Let not your heart be troubled.”
- In John 13, Jesus revealed that one disciple would betray Him and that He was about to leave, so the disciples were troubled.

•Jesus instructed them to set their hearts and minds at ease—though they will face trouble, He doesn’t want their hearts to be troubled.
- The treatment for a troubled heart is trusting in Jesus, who gives peace. (Isaiah 26:3)
• “In My Father’s house…I go to prepare a place for you.”
- Heaven is a place Jesus intimately knows. He goes to prepare a place for His bride so that where He is, His bride may also be. The hope is being with Him forever.

• Jesus suggests they should know where He is going and how to get there, but Thomas’s comment shows otherwise.
- They had been walking with Jesus for three years; walking with Him should change you.
- Some, unlike Thomas, hide their ignorance, which delays progress and growth.
- Jesus spoke of heavenly things, but their minds were focused on earthly things.
- The carnal mind is at enmity with God.
• “I am…the way, the truth, the life.”
- “The” = definite article; only one.
- If your hope is Heaven, you must go the way God has provided, and no one can come to the Father except through the Son.
